Tryout Fic #3: gotspork - Sonic vs. Ken Aftermath

Knuckles blinked, and in doing so he missed the blue streaked blur as it careened into the locker room. However, when he opened his eyes to see Sonic sporting a cocky half-grin, he was neither shocked nor surprised.

"How'd you beat me here Rad Red?" Sonic said half-seriously.

Knuckles, shaking his head annoyed, replied "You must have done a thousand victory laps out there. Bowser could have beat you here on a full stomach. You really are too much of a show off."

Sonic impatiently ran in place. "Aw come on Red... You saw me cream that guy out there."

Knuckles had grown a little exasperated at his friend's lack of humility. He had had this same conversation many times. "Sonic, you did NOT 'cream' him. From what I saw he came close to knocking your lights out several times out there! Did you learn anything from your match?!? Next time you are up against Zero, and you saw what that robot can do..."

For a second Sonic hesitated as he looked at the floor in a slight hint of embarrassment.

Knuckles, now more calmly annoyed than angry, continued "You skipped out on the Zero/Scorpion match didn't you. Fine you run around all day while I learn about the strengths and weaknesses of my opponents-"

"Come on Red, lighten up," Sonic interrupted, anxious to leave the stadium behind, "This is WAY past boring and I'm getting hungry. Join me for a heap of chili dogs?"

"Chili dogs? Sonic you know I'm on a strict training diet..."

----

The stadium was almost cleared. Ken was still in his locker room loading a duffel bag with his things. Frustrated, he tensed up and punched the back of his locker. Suddenly he felt a hand grasp his shoulder.

Ken relaxed his shoulders, and without turning around said, "Two years... That's the second time in a row I've been eliminated in the first round."

"It's ok old friend," replied Ryu as Ken turned to face him. They were two of a kind, kin in all but blood. They even wore similar tunics. Though Ken's was stained in dirt and dried sweat. There was a moment of silence as they regarded each other.

"You fought well," continued Ryu, breaking the silence, "If our master was here he would be proud."

"He was just too fast, I guess. If only I'd connected with that Shoryuken..." Ken replied, in defense of his loss.

"He WAS fast, but you did your best to counter his every move. Remember what we were taught. In every match you should learn something about yourself, and thus make even a defeat a victory. I can tell that you have only improved since you began training for this tournament!" Ryu told his friend with a smile on his face.

Ken lifted his duffel bag up onto his shoulder with one arm. He finally let loose a smile as he turned toward the door.

"I guess I should get out of here. I'll see you back home, Ryu." Ken extended a hand to his longtime friend and companion.

"Say hello to Eliza for me," Ryu replied as he met Ken's hand in a stern handshake. As Ken walked towards the door he remembered something as he looked back a Ryu one last time.

"Here, you might want this," Ken joked as he threw Ryu's headband, which had been used as a bandage for one of his wounds, back to him.

"You might want to wash it first though..." he continued as they both shared a friendly laugh.
