Tryout Fic #2: Aeon Azuran - Sonic vs. Ken

The crowd was tense with anticipation as the two fighters stepped out into the arena. The atmosphere in previous matches had been apathetic and even ridiculous at times, but this was clearly a battle between two experienced opponents. Up in the stands, Knuckles shifted in his seat, lying back with his arms crossed. He remained silent and observant, as was his nature, although he was eager to judge Sonic's performance in the fight. Not only would it help him devise some strategies of his own, but it was entirely possible he would be fighting the hedgehog later in the tournament.

A sharp contrast to the sullen Echidna sitting next to him, Tails was on the edge of his seat, shouting praise and support to his idol.
"Wooo, Sonic! You can do it, beat that guy into the floo..." He was cut off as he felt someone shove his shoulder, turned, and found himself staring right into Vercetti's ugly mug.
"Shaddup kid, willya? Some of us are tryin to watch this match with a little goddamn peace and quiet!"

Sonic tried to drown out his friend's cheers as he sauntered out into the stadium, cocky as ever. Sure, he had seen his buddy Tails lose to that old geezer, but that was Tails; inexperienced, not ready for this kind of competition. Besides, that guy had a sword. This one's just a chump in a red robe...heck, he could be Robuttnick if he were 300 pounds heavier.

Ken, on the other hand, was not one to take an opponent lightly. He knew that despite appearances, this was no ordinary woodland creature; he had seen Sonic's speed in training. They don't call this guy the "Blue Blur" for nothing. Better not rush in, if I play it safe and wait for him to make the first move I can catch him off guard.

The match began. Suddenly Sonic, who had gotten impatient of standing in the same spot for more than 3 seconds, took off at a blindingly fast speed. He circled his opponent several times, and Ken could see little more than streaks of blue and red zig-zagging across his field of vision.

"Hedgehog's faster than the eye, huh?" taunted Sonic, the smirk on his face widening as he continued to run circles around his disoriented opponent. "Don't worry buddy, I'll make this one quick!"

Ken remained silent and in complete concentration, every muscle in his body focused as he tried to read his opponent's movements. This was surely the fastest enemy he had ever faced. Suddenly, he saw Sonic jump into a spinning ball aimed directly at him! Allowing his reflexes to take over, he barely ducked the attack, spun around and kicked high, tripping the hedgehog in midair and causing him to fly several feet through the air before skidding to a halt on the ground.

"How did you like that one? There's plenty more where that came from, ya know," Ken said, flexing his muscle confidently.

The fighter was amazed to see Sonic get up unfazed and still grinning. "Beginners luck," he retorted, wiping the mud off his quills. "I won't go so easy on you this time!"

But Ken wasn't going to wait around for another attack. "HADOKEN!" He yelled as he released a flying ball of energy from his hands, then charged after it to close the distance between the fighters.

Sonic barely rolled out of the way of the incoming attack, only to meet a flurry of fists as his opponent lunged forward. It was all he could do to dodge the onslaught of punches and kicks, moving at full speed and barely staying a step ahead of the fighter. Several times a fist or foot connected, hitting Sonic with a force of incredible power and leaving him dazed and gasping for breath. This is way past uncool, he thought. This guy's a lot tougher than I thought, looks like I can't match him in sheer strength. Time to mix it up a little.

Ken sensed his enemy weakening as he continued to attack head on. But I'll be exhausted before long if I keep fighting at this pace. Best to end it now while I have the advantage! And with that, he shouted "SHORYUKEN!," unleashing a devastating spinning uppercut, but connecting with nothing but air! Suddenly he heard a familiar cocky voice behind him.

"Looking for me?" Sonic was running around Ken so fast that the wind circled around his feet, creating a miniature cyclone! Ken tried to get out of the way, but felt himself being launched off the ground by the force of the air. The shocked look on his face grew as he was flung over 50 feet straight up into the air.

Sonic put his hand to his forehead to get a better view of his opponents flight path. "Thank you for flying Sonic air, please remain in your seats until the plane comes to a complete halt...ouch, that's gotta hurt!" his sarcastic voice rang out as Ken hit the ground with a sickening thud.

The audience cheered at this spectacular end to the fight, particularly Tails, who had closed his eyes in fear of Sonic losing halfway through the match. One in the stands, however, stood up and briskly walked towards the side of his fallen comrade.

"He'll be fine, he's just unconscious," Ryu announced to nobody in particular, checking his friend's pulse and using his headband to bind one of the nastier gashes. "He's tough enough to survive a little fall like that."

But Sonic didn't care. He was already on victory lap number 20.
One chump down, five to go. That trophy's got my name on it!
