GCB Fanfics: The Fanfiction Project

July 25th, 2003 - Continued

Kite had been nowhere to be seen. An opponent less arrogant and confident then Vercetti would have been very worried by not having ever seen his opponent. In the training hall, nowhere, not once in the Hero's Haunt. Several people had noticed, Sora and Ness had asked about him because of his young age, they though he might be fun to hang out with. Link's advisor owl, Kaepora, had tried to gather information on him, simply because it was in his nature. His searches had been unsuccessful. However, most people had just ignored his absence with subtle apathy.

Shino Takagawi was playing Gameboy at the hotel lobby. After seeing so much of Wario he had gone out and bought WarioWare Inc. it was a pretty good game. A few people had seen him around, the gangster Vercetti had run into him, mumbled something about kids, and walked off. Most people had seen him and dismissed him as a fan and left it at that. Few had made the connection that fan's weren't allowed inside the training center and other places and that he infact was allowed in, but most of them dismissed him as a relative of a contestant or administrator. And no one had made the connection that he was Kite.

It was the summer he was getting prepared for High School next year, and from the looks of it, he'd have quite a story to start out with. After having some very impressive in-game accomplishment's in the world, and some people from Gamefaqs had called his house and asked him if he'd like to participate in a little tournament they had going. He had been an avid competitor in last years competition too, but on the consumer side. He'd actually gotten 6th place with a very good bracket last year.

A red trenchcoat glided by him, the sword hanging at an angle hit him in the shoulder. Dante whipped around, "Oh jeez, sorry kid." Dante said apologetically, leaning down to check the wound.

"It's alright," said Shino, "It's just a scratch."

"Hahaha, I like a kid with staying power, but that ain't no scratch kid, you should head to the medical ward to get that patched up. Even though you're not a contestant they should.......wait a minute, how did you get in here, this is a contestant only area."

"...uhmm....uh...I....better get to the medical ward fast, I'm bleeding pretty bad." Said Shino running off in a hurry.

"How would he know where the medical ward is, it's in the middle of the training center?" Dante said inquisitively. "Oh well, I have a date with a cold shower." He walked away not thinking about it.

I don't know why I didn't tell him. I mean he'd probably have been happy to hear that. From what I've seen of him he's a nice guy. He arrived at the training center, and spoke to the guard.

"Sorry no fans allowed in the....Oh it's you Shino, that's a nasty cut you should head to the medical ward."said the guard Steve, who Shino had grown pretty close to. Steve was pretty much the only non-administrative person that knew he was Kite.

"That's why I'm here," Shino grinned feebly. Shino was Japanese, but all the time he spent on The World, a game played by as many American's as Japanese had made him quite proficient at english. After a brief patch up at the medical center he left the training center. Steve caught him.

"Hey, Shino, you have to go talk to admin they finished your android."

"Alright!" said Shino exitedly. He had been waiting for some time for this. Having little actual fighting abilities himself the tournament officials had been working on a to-scale model of Kite, Shino's avatar. He had gotten pretty good with Kite, infact they were gonna give him a keyboard to control him, so it would be just like playing The World. He had fought Skieth, and come out unscathed, which is more than he could say for Orca. Maybe that's why he had been chosen. He had been just going out and doing stuff like it was a game, but he had effects on the real world.

He went to the admin center, where the man only known as CjayC was waiting for him. CjayC seemed to be the boss, but he always worked on the ground level with the others, and Shino liked that about him. Even though he didn't overturn nearly enough of Furious J's witty yet TOS violating messages ¬_¬. "Hello, Shino," said CjayC happily. "We've been working on this round the clock, trying to get it ready for you. I'm really sorry you don't have much time to practice for your match, but we've been on overload here at admin. This contest is a real pain in the ass."

"It's alright, I've been keeping up on the PS2 in the lobby," replied Shino.

"Yeah, but you've been playing Guilty Gear X2." pointed out CjayC.

"It's not my fault that game is so awesome." explained Shino.

"Anyway here it is." CjayC said, opening a curtain. Behind it was a working model of Kite. Wearing the Orange outfit. In each hand was a crooked blade. "We had the physical model up in about a week, but the skill system was a pain to get programmed in there."

"Oh Boy!!! I can't wait to try it out."

"Here's the keyboard use this to control it, come on give it a try, its just the basic controls. Arrow pad controls him. You can set any key to be a hot key for a specific spell or action, but I recommend using the scroll menu like you do in The World except for the actions of course. The screen with the menu, allows you to see through Kite's eyes and see the scroll menu. It's set up with all the spells and skills you had from the world. We gave these weapon's the same stat's as the Hell's Gate weapon you had, but we started making the blades before we realized that. Also here is this headset it'll allow you to hear anything said to Kite and talk through him." Shino grabbed the controls and started working them. Kite began to move. It took Shino a while to figure out how to move him right. But he quickly learned, soon Kite was jumping all around the room, flipping like a ninja, and swinging his daggers like a pro.

"Awesome," said Shino, "I'm gonna go to the training center right now to try it out."'

"Good luck, Shino," said CjayC as Shino left the admin center. I wonder what people will say when they see Kite? thought Shino. Hmmm....it'd probably be best if I didn't let anyone on yet. I'll just wait out here. Shino sat down on a bench, and started operating the android of his avatar.

----

Ryo Hazuki, watched from the back. No one had really noticed him, he'd thought about asking Ryu to train with him, but decided against it. He didn't want to interfere in anybodies training. It had always been Ryo's nature to do thing's by himself. So he decided that he didn't need to start now. Besides he'd seen too many tearful goodbye's so far. He was glad that when he left, he wouldn't have to worry about missing anyone. It had been the same last year, he had come and he had gone nobody seemed to notice him, he'd even made it to round two last year. Lara Croft had come up to say hi, after all she remembered him from beating the snot out of him the previous year.

His next match was against Dante, and from what the people said it would be his last. He really did need some training against weaponry. Hmmm....maybe this new kid'll give me some training. "Hey, Kite." Ryo piped up. "Wanna do some training?"

"That's why I'm here," Shino's voice said through the robot, it sounded particularly real. Kite and Ryo walked into the sparring center.

"Listen, I want training against combat against weapon's so feel free to use them." Ryo told Kite settling into his fighting stance.

"Sure thing," said Kite.

Ryo sat in a back stance preparing for Kite, when Kite didn't move Ryo did, he lunged forward at the android with a barrage of punches. Shino reacted by hitting the block button. Kite immediately blocked every last one of Ryo's attacks with his fore arms. Wow thought Ryo, this kids got skills, that was a good combo.

"Hehe," Shino said outside, off of the headset, "Let's see what this thing can do." He pulled up the scroll menu and selected swirling darkness. Inside Kite rushed towards Ryo then leaped into the air and began spinning at break neck speed.

"Swirling Darkness!!!!" yelled the avatar. Ryo ducked under the first flurry of attacks and then back handspringed out of the way, and came diving back with a high kick, over the swirling storm of daggers. Shino, hit the block button, but Kite needed to finish his attack before he blocked and Ryo's kick connected with Kite square in the head. Kite skidded back, but stayed on it's feet. Ryo was coming with another flying side kick, but now the attack had finished, and Shino tried the parry button out. Kite ducked under the side kick and caught Ryo's tucked in leg. Ryo saw what was happening and with incredibly defined martial arts reflexes, he spun around and kicked Kite in the side of the head. However, he also completely lost his balance and hit the ground back first and slid back to the wall. Kite got back up and spun its dagger's around to show it was ready. Ryo got back up too. "That's pretty good, kid, let's call it a day."

Behind the two of them a small crowd had gathered. No one had even seen Kite yet, and nobody had really noticed Ryo Hazuki, so the two of them putting on a show was something worth watching. The gangster Tommy Vercetti piped up, "Wait, who the hell are these two?" pointing at Kite and Ryo.

"That one's Ryo Hazuki, he made it to round two last year, and the other one I think is Kite, your opponent." Fox McCloud answered.

"No ****, well **** this is gonna be easier than I imagined," said Vercetti, turning away from the sparring area and walking towards the cafeteria laughing.

"Was I really that bad?" Kite asked the Star Fox.

"No, you were great, in fact if he says it's not gonna be a problem that means he's probably worried about it." Fox responded kindly.

"Awesome," said Kite. Back on the outside Shino was beginning to get hungry. "Well gotta go," said Kite. Kite walked out of the arena. Hmmmm.... where am I gonna put him while I get some food? thought Shino. He decided the back of the hotel was as good a place as any. So he had Kite walk around to the back, and then he followed to switch the power off. After he finished a voice came from behind him.

"I figured as much." Shino whirled around to see Ryo Hazuki standing there. "That explains why you've been allowed in all the players area's, I was beginning to expect something like that, and having the fight with that robot sealed it for sure."

"Really, how did you know?" Shino asked, kind of embarassed.

"Well...you can't kick a solid metal robot in the face, without knowing you're kicking a solid metal robot in the face." Ryo responded bending down to massage his foot. "Why do you think I asked to stop so early?"

"Good point, I'm sorry," apologized Shino.

"Not a problem, hey why don't we go get some food at the cafeteria?" suggested Ryo.

"Yeah, I'm starving." said Shino.
