Vs. Mode - Snake vs. KnucklesThe camera floated over the base. The obscure, mysterious location appears to have been abandoned long ago, although it shows signs of recent excavation and rehabilitation. Fans are being flown in via jets on a hastily constructed runway, and quickly ushered into the only thing that looks serviceable in the area, the stadium. Looking closely, the well-positioned government agents with rifles can just be seen, explaining why the fans are being ushered so quickly. Unlike Shadow Moses Island, the government apparently still has secrets here that are not for public viewing. "Welcome back to Vs. Mode live on Pay-per-Play! Today we're coming to you from the mysterious Zanzibar Stadium, where we'll wrap up the second round of the GameFAQs Great Character Battle! I'm Brock!" "And I'm Lucca! Let's hope this stadium doesn't get as torn up as the last one. Our first match is actually a rematch from last year, once again pitting the covert ops agent Solid Snake against the Guardian of the MasterEmerald, Knuckles. Last year, Snake defeated Knuckles in the second round with some well aimed shots from his SOCOM. The critically injured echidna was unable to continue, and Snake moved on to the next round. Will the result be the same this year? Or will Knuckles pull off the ups-" "It looks like we're about to find out!" interrupts Brock, as Knuckles enters to his rap music, accompanied again by Sonic. ---- "Remember, Rad Red," says Sonic, "you can take this guy. You're better prepared this year, and you know what to expect from him. You'll beat him." Knuckles smiled at the hedgehog. Say what you want about Sonic, he didn't lack confidence, in either his friends or himself. "Thanks. I needed that." "No problem. It's gonna be you and me in the finals. I can feel it." Sonic walked over to the stands. Knuckles entered the ring and turned to face his opponent. ---- "Here comes our other competitor, Solid Snake," Brock says as Snake enters the stadium to the Metal Gear Solid theme. Lucca takes over, "As a reminder to our viewers, being under the ring has been ruled the same as being outside the ring, so Knuckles can burrow under the ring, as long as he doesn't stay there for more than ten seconds. This could be a crucial advantage for Knuckles, as he can move without his opponent knowing where he is." Ref-Bot floats to the center of the ring. "Players, to your positions. Player 1 ready?" Snake nods. "Player 2 ready?" "Ready," replies Knuckles. "Combatants ready. Raise force barriers. Match 45, Snake vs. Knuckles. 3, 2, 1... fight!" "Powers on, games started!" exclaims Brock. "Snake quick-draws his SOCOM, but is forced to dive out of the way as Knuckles rockets by! Knuckles takes to the air, gliding around for another pass!" "You wouldn't think it, but Knuckles is surprisingly agile in the air," adds Lucca, "and he's proving it now! Dodging three shots from the SOCOM, he slams into Snake! Snake rolls with the hit and kicks Knuckles away, but he's got to be hurting. Knuckles takes to the air again!" "But Snakes prepared for the maneuver this time, as he pulls out the M-16! Snake opens up with the rifle, and it's clear Knuckles won't be able to dodge those for long, much less get close enough to Snake to hit him again!" "Knuckles just dived into the ground and burrowed under the ground! Our stadium maintenance people won't be happy about this!" "Uhh... Lucca, you're in charge of stadium maintenance." "Oh. Right." "Snake takes another hit as Knuckles flies out of the ground! The M-16 is broken, but Snakes not out yet! Knuckles takes a couple of hits to the body and jaw. Both fighters look like they're hurting! Snake detaches the AK-47 from his back and lets loose! Knuckles barely dodges under ground in time!" "I don't think Knuckles got away completely. It looked like he got grazed on the leg. If so, he may lose some of his speed advantage. Snake reloads, listening intently." "Snake barely dodges in time, but he's still sprayed with rock and debris as Knuckles hurtles out of the ground again! Snake sprays bullets, but the echidna dodges back under the ring.!" "I'd have to give the advantage to Knuckles at this point Brock. He has the initiative, and Snake can't take this kind of punishment much longer. Another couple of hits like that and he's going to lose." "Speaking of hits, Snake gets rocked again by Knuckles! I agree, Lucca, the echidna's strategy is working perfectly. Snake doesn't know where the next hit is coming from." ---- Out in the ring, Snake was thinking much the same thing. OK, he thought as he watched that damned rodent disappear down a hole again, new strategy. What else can I use against this guy? Guns won't work, grenades don't have a big enough bla- heh. Got it. Snake quickly went to work. ---- "What's Snake doing in the ring?" asks Brock. "He's not even trying to see where Knuckles will come out next." "He appears to be working on something in the ring and WOW that was a close one! Snake barely dodges aside, and now he's firing with the AK again but Knuckles is already go-wait a minute! Snake has FIVE BLOCKS OF C4 IN HIS HANDS! He just shoved them down the hole Knuckles' created!" "Snake dives off the ring, and Knuckles has come flying-" The rest of Brock's sentence is lost as the ring explodes, then collapses leaving a cratered and shattered ring in its wake. Snake immediately gets back in what's left of the ring, but on the other side a battered and bloody Knuckles is out cold. "Winner: Solid Snake," intones Ref-Bot. "And there you have it!" Brock exclaims. "Solid Snake has blown up the ring in an unbelievable desperation maneuver! Knuckles fought bravely, and many would even say he was winning, but you never know what the crafty covert ops specialist will pull. Solid Snake moves on to the round of 16, where he'll face either Ryu or Dante. Speaking of those two, we'll have their match just as soon as Lucca gets the ring put back together. So don't go away!" Lucca looks at Brock disgustedly. "Are you kidding? This could take hours! They've completely totaled the ring! I'll basically have to start over from scratch!" "Uhhh... did you know you're cute when you're angry?" As the camera fades the sound of a heavy object colliding with Brock's head can be heard. ---- Sonic walked beside Knuckles as his friend was rolled to the Medical Facility. "Don't worry about it Rad Red. Blowing up the ring was a cheap trick. You would have had him if he'd fought fair." Knuckles frowned at the hedgehog. "You're wrong Sonic. I was the one using the cheap trick. He just found the weakness. I was so glad I was winning that I didn't even think there could be a catch to it. But Snake's too clever to let a single move beat him." Knuckles lay back in the stretcher. "He was the best fighter in the ring that match, and he won because of it. Be careful if you face him, Sonic." "Yeah, don't worry Knuckles. If I fight him, I'll get him back for you." Knuckles just closed his eyes and smiled. Next Entry Back |
