GCB Fanfics: Vs. Mode

Vs. Mode - Max vs. Sephiroth

"Welcome back to Vs. Mode!" Lucca smiled to the camera as she and her co-host sat, ready for the next day of fights. "It's time for end the South Division of round two, with Max Payne, the surprise round two entrant, versus Sephiroth, a man who seems to have a path laid out to the finals. A hard path, but many expect him to win"

"I'd say Sephiroth holds the definite advantage here" Brock added. "He beat down Raziel pretty badly. Max Payne won over Gordon, but he seemed to struggle, and this is the same Gordon who got beaten pretty badly by the pro-wrestler known as Tina Armstrong. Ah Tina, how I wish she was in this contest...yeah, that'd be so great..."

"Right" Lucca quickly said before Brock went on. "Well, the advantage is with Sephiroth here, but we'll see. Upsets can and do happen. And here it comes. The first competitor is coming down, Max Payne"

Music played for Max Payne as the cop came down the hall, aiming his gun to show off a bit for the crowd. He got some mild cheers and applause from the audience, but nothing spectacular came his way. As he took his place to the ring, Brock began to analyze his chances.

"Max Payne fought last year and took out Dirk the Daring in a fairly easy match with an expected outcome. He then fought against the surprise contendor of Scorpion, who thoroughly crushed Max and then went on to beat Pac-Man before falling to the man himself, Link. This year he's taken out Gordon, but as most have judged, that's no impressive feat, given how close it was"

Max stepped into the ring, his gun in his hand. He smirked around a bit and brushed some dust off of his jacket. "This crowd looks like they're not expecting much. They're going to get more than they bargained for"

The adrenaline seemed to suddenly swell up as the audience exploded into cheers at the sound of Sephiroth's theme from Final Fantasy 7. Down came the man himself, masamune in one hand. He took his time walking down the ring, seemingly not paying attention to the massive amounts of fans and screaming girls who were cheering for him. Sephiroth stopped a few seconds through and gave Max a quick glance. The ex-cop replied with a glare, leaving Sephiroth to just enter the ring.

"Oh, I wish the girls would cheer for ME like that..." Groaned a dissapointed Brock. "Well, either way, Sephiroth sure has a fanbase up for him and they're hoping for him to crush Max P. Hey Lucca, would it be okay if I walked behind you while wearing a long, silver wig and a black jacket, and then--"

"NO!" Lucca quickly yelled in response. Brock sighed and Lucca quickly cleared her throat, embarrased by her own reaction. "Well, whether it was stabbing Aeris, the sword itself or just looking like he does, Sephiroth sure has his fans"

"The fans aren't the only thing Sephiroth has on his side" Brock continued. "He has great magic and swordsman skills that have beaten MegaMan and Samus Aran, among others in the past. Will Max be early-round chump change to Sephiroth, or can the shooter actually do some damage to Sephiroth?"

"We'll be finding out momentarily as the last match of the South Division continues and the opponent of Alucard will be decided!"

"So, Sephiroth" Max grinned as he stared down his opponent in the ring. "Don't you think you're being a little confident"

"I don't think so" Replied Sephiroth. "I don't see why I should bother with you. I don't even see why THEY bothered with you when they revived you after what Scorpion did to you"

"I may have gotten slaughtered, literally, but at least I'm not the impudent, bisexual bygamist" Max boasted with a smirk coming across his face.

It was then that Sephiroth realized it. A jolt of anger entered him, and his face became a mild glare as he looked at his opponent and spoke what he had just figured out. "It was you, wasn't it? You're the one who started that rumor?"

"You're damn right it was me" Max replied. "You deserve it"

"I'll show you deserving, as YOU will get what YOU deserve" Sephiroth stated as he twisted his wrist around a bit to point his blade at Sephiroth.

"Say what you want" Max replied in a cocky tone. "But today, I'll show everyone they were wrong! I'll rightfully become a legend by doing what nobody thinks I can--BY KILLING YOU!" He threatened, pointing a gun at Sephiroth.

"If you're so confident, how about a friendly wager?" Sephiroth asked loudly, loudly enough so that Brock and Lucca could hear.

"I'm listening" Max replied.

"If I do not defeat you in one hit, I will forfeit the match to you" A huge shock of expression crept upon Max's face as he heard this. Satisfied at Max's reaction so far, Sephiroth continued. "If you are to be defeated now, you cannot be revived"

"Are you kidding me?" Replied Payne, very shocked. "What is wrong with you? Nobody's stupid enough to take that risk! You WANT me to beat you or something?"

"No, not at all" Sephiroth replied. "I am confident, as you are. But if you don't want to take the risk, especially with Brock and Lugia up there..."

"Excuse me, my name is Lucca!" Lucca announced to the ring.

"Don't worry, they get my name wrong a lot, too" Brock told his partner, trying to comfort her through her apparent annoyance.

Max growled. "All right then, but you're gonna pay for that! I hope you've enjoyed fighting, because this is going to be your last!"

"You heard it here, folks" Lucca announced. "Sephiroth, who can't get my name right, has made a bet with Max! If he doesn't win in one shot, then he'll forfeit, but if he does, then Max can't come back even if Aeris and the healers want him to!"

As Lucca said this, the "anti-fans" of Sephiroth began to get riled up, cheering for Max. "Max is gonna put the Payne on you!" One fan could be heard yelling, while another put in the jeer of "You're going down now, you bisexual bygamist!" "Long-haired fruitcake!" "Sissy pretty-boy Final Fantasy loser!" These upon other things came towards Sephiroth's way. Sephiroth could only close his eyes and smirk though, as he felt nothing from these petty insults from the crowd.

Ref-Bot floated to the middle of the ring. "Players 1, ready"

"Oh yeah" Max replied while still keeping an angry glare on Sephiorth.

"Player 2, ready"

"Ready" Replied Sephiroth.

"Ready...three...two...one...fight"

Max grinned and put his gun back in the holster. "I won't even need this for you, I'll use my fists for this!"

Max quickly dashed at Sephiroth with a forward punch. The swordsman simply slid himself out of the way with a step, leaving Max to miss and nearly fall out of the ring. Max turned and rushed at Sephiroth again, coming forward with another punch. Sephiroth put up an arm to block, then dashed past Max quickly. Max took his gun and dashed into Sephiroth, slamming him and taking a shot to his stomach. The long-haired swordsman fell.

"And Sephiroth while doing nothing but dodging and blocking was shot in the stomach and hit the ground!" Lucca told the gasping crowd. "He's down, but is he out quite yet"

"She wishes" Sephiroth smirked as he got to his feet quickly, the crowd cheering for him all the while.

"Gr..." Max yelled and began to dash at Sephiroth, leaving his gun behind for martial arts attacks.

"And punches and kicks come Sephiroth's way, but Sephiroth continues to block and any attacks thrown by Max don't seem to phase him. Maybe he should've stuck to shooting"

Max threw another punch to him, but Sephiroth was able to hold his hand up and catch Max's fist. Before Sephiroth could capitalize on this to make his strike, Max raised his foot to hit Sephiroth in the stomach. Sephiroth let go of Max's hand, and Max leapt at Sephiroth with a fist to the face, then followed by several more punching attacks, backing Sephiroth to the edge of the ring.

"And as Max Payne continues his assault, Sephiroth is either dodging, blocking or--oh, he didn't block that one at all" Brock announced.

As Sephiroth stammered a bit from the most recent hit from Max that wasn't dodged, Max drew his gun and aimed it at Sephiroth. "Okay Sephiroth, time to take you DOWN!"

Sephiroth took advantage of Max's talking by leaping to the left and standing there, waiting for Max to make a move. Max growled in a bit of anger then came at Sephiroth again, and took a shot of his gun. Sephiroth side-stepped this attack as well, and now stood behind Max. Max turned around and instinctively thrust his foot forward towards Sephiroth. Sephiroth decided to let the attack go, partly because he couldn't escape. A foot to Sephiroth's mid section sent the silver-haired villain a few feet back.

Max held his gun in his right hand now. He looked up with a grin at Sephiroth, standing there, like a sitting duck, with nothing he could do because of his own wager. ~Okay, Sephiroth, this is where it ends...~ The ex-cop thought to himself as he looked at Sephiroth with a grin. A bead of sweat ran down his face, as the anticipation filled him. ~I'm finally gonna make a name for myself now...~

Max pulled his right arm into the air, aiming his gun and ready to finish off what he desired to do. "Okay Sephiroth, this is it!" Max quickly began to dash at Sephiroth, who stood across the ring, not moving. The crowd feel shockingly silent as Max leapt into the air, his gun aiming downwards, a bullet being reserved to find a new home in Sephiroth's heart.

That's when it happened. So fast, he didn't even see it until it was too late. Sephiroth's right arm holding masamune whipped to the side, shockingly fast. Max's eyes widened in terror as he realized what he had fallen into. His hands were frozen by fear as he slowly came down from his jump. His eyes followed as Sephiroth's sword move quickly to the side, and then, in an instant, snapped straight to the left in one swift, clean slash.

And that was that. Max hit the floor in two parts, his upper body covered by his jacket. Blood leaked over the ring, from both halves on the floor. Everyone stared in shock at this gruesomeness.

Ref-Bot announced the winner at that. "The winner: Sephiroth"

"My...my goodness!" Lucca clenched her chest as she looked on, gasping. "Just like that, it's over...oh, I can't look!" Lucca turned her head, apparently not able to handle the sight of the amount of blood that covered the ring where Max had been finished.

"Sephiroth has cut Max in half with one blow, just as he said, and the ring is now just a bloody mess..." Brock observed as Lucca still had her head turned away. "That was one of the shortest fights I've ever seen, Max didn't even stand a chance. The gruesomeness is yet to be matched...I don't think we're going to see this kind of carnage in this tournament again...at least I hope not"

"And I guess...this is goodbye to Max Payne. He agreed that he wouldn't be brought back after this..." Lucca said.

"Let him come back" Came an interrupting voice. All eyes in the stadium turned to Sephiroth, who was standing at the edge of the ring. "He's payed for his confidence, I would have nothing to prove by killing a weakling such as him. He's shown what kind of man he truly is, and that will be bad enough for him for the rest of his lifetime"

"And, I guess we can call Sephiroth a good sport as...oh, can someone PLEASE take care of the ring?" Lucca closed her eyes and looked away from the sight of Max's body laying in two bloody pieces in the middle of the ring.

"Well, it seems that Max WILL come back. Man, that was a short match...well, that's it for today. Tommorow we're going to re-join with the West Division, as it begins with Solid Snake taking on Knuckles the Echidna in the first rematch of the tournament. For Vs. Mode, I'm Brock"

"And I'm Lucca who's wishing that someone would PLEASE get that thing out of the ring! See ya tommorow!"
