Vs. Mode - Interlude: "A Time for Heroes"

Chapter I:
"The Dawn of Chaos"

Aki Komachi was going to die.

The thought did not cross her mind when she first bought tickets for the multiverse-spanning tournament with her friends (the ads did say that the force fields are quite sturdy and can withstand anything short of a concentrated nuclear blast), but as she plummeted back down to the stands at an accelerated rate, she knew that her last moments on earth was fast approaching.

She closed her eyes and resigned herself to her fate, fully expecting to come out of the arena carried in a spatula.

A pleasantly surprising sensation like a large wad of cotton catching her fall made her eyes snap open. As she looked around her and at the people with equally surprised expressions, she noticed a few things: a) They were all still alive, b) they were all suspended in mid-air, and c) a strange, blue energy field was keeping them there.

The source of said energy field was from a certain blue-clad robot firing a Magnetic Beam set to a widespread. For a robot who's not supposed to have the advanced emotional systems of a Reploid, Megaman was doing a pretty good imitation of a man being strained to his limits. He gritted his teeth as he prayed to whatever forces were watching up there that he does not run out of energy before he's able to bring the people safely to the ground.

"C'mon everyone! The audience needs our help!"

No sooner did the words leave the child robot's mouth do the different fighters of the tournament spring to action. Most of them having been heroes and legends of their own nodes, the task of rescuing people was already ingrained within them.

And so, just as the dawn of chaos came, so did the time of heroes begin, to clash with one another again as many times past.

Typoon was annoyed. Here he was enjoying himself throwing people up into the air, and that kid was spoiling all his fun. As he flowed towards that strange little boy with the strange little hand, he idly wondered why he was wearing his underwear on the outside. He wondered about it so much in fact, that he didn't notice the pink marshmallow until it was too late.

Typoon's world became soft and pink for a moment, before he was spat out, nay, blown out towards the empty upper seats. When it came to, a few seconds later, it was shocked to find itself staring at a miniature pink copy of itself bobbing enthusiastically towards it. So shocked, in fact, that he didn't do anything beside stare until Kirboon let out a mighty tornado that carried Typoon up into the air and clobbered him senseless with metal seats that were ripped out by the mighty gales.

Typoon was unconscious long before it crashed into the stadium seats for the second time that day.

The people cowered before the form of the fire demon Ifrit, knowing full well of its powers and how it can incinerate them with a mere snap of his fingers. The demon chuckled to itself as the humans ran, feeling his strength flow through his veins after a long time being imprisoned within that orb. "As it was before, as it should be forever!" the fire beast roared, it's voice like the sound of a raging volcano "Ifrit is no one's slave! You mortals shall pay for stealing my will!"

Ifrit waved with one hand, and a torrent of flame flew towards the fleeing crowds. The fire demon laughed as the people screamed and tried to escape from a fiery death, but his laugh stopped abruptly when an explosion of cold air extinguished the rushing flames.

Ifrit growled in anger, "Who... dares!"

There was a flash of light and the demon beast reflexively launched a small ball of flame. Fireball met ice beam in a small battle for dominance before both cancelled each other out. Ifrit growled menacingly as he stared into the visor of his opponent.

Samus stared back, not an ounce of fear in the bounty hunter's eyes. "I dare, monster."

The Metroid hunter jumped over a larger fireball and launched a second charged ice missile at Ifrit. Unfortunately, she had underestimated Ifrit's ability to recover from an attack, and a flame wave, stronger than the first, incinerated the missile and set her Fusion Suit. Even through the Varia Suit enhancement, Samus could feel the intense heat bake away the moisture from her body, and by the time she landed, she was staggering around, suffering from a mild heat stroke.

This made her easy pickings for the demon, as he immediately pinned her to the ground with a massive fist.

"Foolish automation, did you truly think that you can defeat Ifrit?" the demon taunted as fire intense enough to evaporate steel collected in his free hand.

A stinging sensation ran up his arm and he roared in pain. A quick glance to his side revealed that his arm, from hand to shoulder, has been turned to ice. With a snarl, he turned his head and found a green-clad elf nocking another arrow.

"She may not be able to," Link said as he aimed a second ice arrow, "but I sure can."

Ifrit growled as he charged at Link, demonic speed allowing him to shorten the distance between them within seconds. The Hylian, surprised by the large beast's speed, missed his second shot by a few inches. Before he can even draw his third arrow, the summoned monster was already upon him, his unfrozen arm raised for a killing blow.

An ice beam to his arm made him realize too late that he had foolishly let go of Samus in his rage. That was his last thought for a while as the warrior from the past and the warrior from the future turned him into a frozen statue.

Unlike the other two summons, Ramuh did not lose his temper easily. Unlike the younger summons, Ramuh had much experience in keeping his emotions in check.

Nonetheless, his current opponent was definitely testing the limits of his formerly thought unbreakable temper.

"Young man, would you please stop absorbing all of my attacks. I do not plan to kill these people, just shock them a bit to see if these weary old bones still have it in them."

Squall, drawing the massive lightning attacks into his body and directing them to the Quetzacoatl Guardian Force he had junctioned, merely shook his head, muttering a short "Whatever..."

Ramuh sighed. It would appear that a change of attack was in order. The Lightning God cut off his lightning discharge, raised his staff dramatically...

...and promptly fell on his flat on face as something slammed into his back at high speeds. Said something stood in front of him, irritatedly tapping a red sneaker wearing foot on the ground in impatience.

"Geez old man, you even get up slow. I could have run around this entire stadium ten times before you got back on your knobby knees."

Ramuh glared at Sonic with something very close to but not quite anger in his eyes. He would show this arrogant whippersnapper a thing or two about respecting his elders...

A sharp rapport at the back of his head cleared that thought and the rest of his consciousness away. The last thing he heard before blacking out was the blue hedgehog saying, "That was cool Rad Red, but I could have taken him out myself."
