Vs. Mode - Interlude: "The Balance of Power"

The matches were finally over that day. Great Bay Stadium was empty, with fan litter and a destroyed ring the only evidence of the fierce battles that took place. Most of the competitors had already taken off for the next site, but not all of them.

The Gerudo doctors and nurses that inhabited the Termina's Great Bay were kept busy all night, tending to Ganondorf Dragmire. He may not have come from their world, but he was still a male Gerudo, which made him highly important to the ones treating him. Termina was untouched by the evil of Ganondorf, so they had no idea of the ruthless deeds he was responsible for back in Hyrule. All they knew was that he needed desparate attention, and they were going to give it to him.

Link paced outside the room where the deposed King of Evil rested. The boy wasn't comfortable with the way the Gerudos were looking at him, and he wished that he could have been anywhere else at that moment. The only reason he was here was because of the Princess. Not only did he think of himself as her protector, but also a loyal follower of her few commands. She wanted to ask their mortal enemy about what he knew about the Triforce of Power, and here he was: protecting her and doing as she asked.

The door opened as two nurses and one doctor stepped out to meet with Link and Zelda. "You may see him, now."

"Thank you," Zelda said, curtseying to them before entering the room ahead of Link. Their eyes beheld a pitiful sight. The same man responsible for the ruin of the Golden Land and the near-destruction of Hyrule laid almost lifeless on the lone white bed in the room. He breathed through a mask, and his right arm was bandaged, emphasizing his missing hand. An IV was attached to his left forearm, dripping fluid to keep Ganondorf hydrated. His two visitors stood on either side of his bed, waiting for any sign of life.

The eyelids of the sole Gerudo male in the world opened a crack, barely revealing his tired red eyes. He spoke in a whisper, "You two... Have you come to finally be rid of me, once and for all? Without the Triforce of Power, there is nothing to stop you from doing so."

"No, Ganondorf. Despite your deeds, we are not here to exact vengeance," Zelda said. "We've come to know one thing."

"Tell us all you can about the Triforce of Power," Link demanded.

He managed a weak laugh. "And why should I tell you? So you can control it, once you obtain it from my victor? I will do no such thing."

Zelda replied, "Evil forces in the tournament have observed how a Triforce part could be obtained. If someone were to assemble the complete Triforce, disaster could befall not just our dimension, but others as well! If you could please help us, Ganondorf, then... the Triforce of Power will be returned to you."

"Princess!! You don't mean that!"

Zelda gave Link a sad look. "It's his destiny to hold it, Link, as it is ours to defeat him. Returning the Triforce to its rightful owner will restore the balance of power, and that is better than the chaos that could be unleashed."

"No! He'll be free to do everything he's done again!"

"The known evil is preferred to the unknown, Link. We can stop Ganondorf. We may not be able to stop whatever ill-made wish is made on the Triforce."

Ganondorf laughed before succumbing to a coughing fit. "So be it." He grinned at the frowning Zelda and a scowling Link. "For the sake of the balance of power..."
