GCB Fanfics: Vs. Mode

Vs. Mode - Ganondorf vs. Magus

"We are back folks, just in time for one of the most anticipated matches of the second round!" Lucca enthuses. "These two fighters showed their stuff early on in the first round, and now it's time for them to battle again against each other in a dark wizards' duel."

The Hyrule Overworld Theme is heard once more as Ganondorf Dragmire steps up to loud cheers and a smattering of boos from the crowd. "He may have already been at ringside, but the Great King of Evil wants his intro anyway. Tri-Force's Ganondorf was on the brink of elimination against the tenth squad leader of Double-F, Tidus, in the first round, but he managed to pull out a tough victory with his Warlock Punch. He'll have to do better if he wants a chance to fight Link in the next round."

The Gerudo smirks at the reaction he receives. "Do you hear that, boy? Those people are cheering for me. They'll cheer even louder when I finally crush you."

"Stop getting ahead of yourself. You nearly lost against your last opponent because of that," Link replies. "I would like a chance to fight you again in the tournament, but you have to win first, and for that, you need to focus."

Ganondorf laughs at his nemesis. "Have you forgotten that I can be defeated only by holy weapons, such as the Blade of Evil's Bane? That girlish looking boy may have given me a few injuries, but he was nowhere near capable of overcoming one such as I. My next victim uses dark magic, of which I am very familiar, and my swords are more than enough for his scythe. He will not stop me from my destined battle against you."

Link shakes his head. "I am just warning you, Ganondorf. Don't underestimate Magus. He can cast spells that none of us have ever seen before. If Tidus could make you kiss the floor, without a doubt, Magus could do that and more."

Their heads turn as Magus' haunting theme music begins to play. Ganondorf looks down at the back of his right hand, where the Triforce of Power glows, as he says, "We shall see."

"And here comes Magus!" Lucca excitedly says. The prince of Zeal enters to more boisterous cheering from the spectators. "The man formerly known as Janus forced a surrender out of Splinter Cell Sam Fisher in his first match. Magus suffered a few bullet wounds and a shredded cape, but he doesn't show any signs of either as he prepares to take another step forward in the GCB. Crono once again accompanies the magician to the ring."

"Are you worrying about me, again?" Magus says without looking back at the spiky redheaded swordsman. "I am aware of Ganondorf's inherent advantage, but it doesn't concern me in the slightest." Crono gives a confused look at Magus' back. "Worry more for your next opponent. As for me, this match is but a diversion." Magus floats up onto the stone circle to meet his confident foe.

"No amount of analysis could do this match justice. Both use the darkest of magics, and they can effectively use their conventional weapons as well. It's too close to call. So, I'll just let the fighters do the talking," Brock says.

"Sounds more like a cop-out to me," Lucca answers.

"Hey! That's my honest opinion."

"Sure it is." Lucca's voice drips with sarcasm.

"Players, to your positions. Player 1, ready?"

Ganondorf punches his left palm. "Ready!"

"Player 2, ready?"

Magus pulls his gloves on a little tighter. "Ready."

"Combatants ready. Raise force barriers."

"If they can endure this match, nothing can break them," Lucca predicts.

"Match 34, Ganondorf vs. Magus. 3, 2, 1... fight!"

"Power's on; game's started in what should be a match for the ages! Both fighters elect to start without their weapons, which means the magic is going to fly. Ganondorf begins by gathering energy into a ball and flinging it toward Magus. The blue-haired sorcerer responds with Magic Wall."

"Good move on Magus' part. Magic Wall adds a cool looking green aura onto a person and temporarily cuts any magic damage they suffer down to a third of what it could have done. The Prism Dress also comes enchanted with a permanent Magic Wall. The dress looks great, and Marle loves it, but actually wearing it is a big pain. It just isn't my cup of tea."

"Thanks for more information than necessary, Lucca," Brock says, returning his focus back to the ring. "Anyway, back to the battle. Ganondorf pulls out his twin swords to get around Magus' magic wall. The two of them are locked in a battle of steel as Magus tries to parry each of the blows, but some of Ganondorf's slashes are getting through."

"Magus won't be able to win if he keeps this up. His scythe is quick, but it can't protect two places at once. Magus leaps up and over Ganondorf to land on the other side of the ring. With some distance between them, Magus casts Dark Bomb! The King of Evil took a direct hit and looks a little shaken."

"Ganondorf is back to his sense though as he gathers a dark energy ball of his own. He holds it over his head and throws it at Magus, where it disperses into a barrage of energy sparks! The Magic Wall is still active, but it fades away after that last attack. Magus counters with Ice 2, but Ganondorf slices the raining ice boulders before they hit him! This is not looking good for the blue-haired sorcerer."

"Don't worry, Brock. Magus has a lot more techs at his disposal, such as the one he just used, Fire 2! One of my favorites, that spell summons an expanding ring of fire and some explosions afterwards. Ganondorf got deep fried by that fiery attack."

"Magus continues to bring the pain with Lightning 2! The Gerudo got caught in a whirling vortex of electricity that surely left him shocked. Ganondorf took a whole load of punishment, but he's still on his feet. He looks really fatigued, and Magus glides in for a slice from his Doom Sickle that sends him to the ground! What a match, folks! Ref-Bot has hovered in from a safe distance to put this one in the books."

Magus wipes the sweat from his brow and looks down at his bloody torn clothes. "Your power was impressive, but you're nowhere near Lavos." The wizard starts to walk away.

"... 7, 8, hold on! Ganondorf is getting up!? He did the same thing in his match with Tidus. This guy just won't stay down!"

Magus spins around to find The Triforce of Power beginning to glow as Ganondorf's eyes become white. "Impressive? That was nothing. You're about to see the full extent of my powers!" Ganondorf cackles as his form darkens and expands. His voice grows even deeper as his shadow covers nearly the entire ring. The whole process takes about half a minute as the Great King of Evil shows his true nature.

"Oh my goodness, it's Ganon!" Lucca shouts. "Ladies, gentlemen, and creatures, Ganondorf has just used the Triforce of Power to transform into a gargantuan pig monster! Those tusks look intimidating, and so is that trident he's wielding! Magus better have a plan, or else this will be the end for him."

Said dark magician didn't flinch throughout his opponent's metamorphosis. Magus turns to Crono and tosses the boy his Doom Sickle. The weapon would not be of any use to him now. Ganon laughs in his deeper voice before looking down on his relatively small foe. "Ah, it's good to be back in this form. What do you think? You have nothing that can possibly hurt me like this! Why don't you just give up? That way, at least you'll live." The pig narrows his eyes as Magus laughs at his threat. "What's so funny?"

The wizard sweeps his cape behind him before answering, "You are pitifully hiding behind that artifact in your right hand because you know you are nothing without it. After my last encounter with Lavos, I have known that I, myself, am also insignificant. It's only those around a person that makes one significant. I have learned that lesson, but you obviously have not."

Ganon roars in anger as he tries to impale Magus on the trident, but his foe floats backward to dodge. "Fine then! I will make your grave where I stand!"

"If it's my destiny to die here, then I must simply laugh." Magus conceals one hand within his cape. "But I feel that my destiny does not end here. Dark Matter!"

The Shadow spell surrounds Ganon for a few seconds before it dissipates. The monstrous pig snorts in contempt. "You fool!" Ganon laughs once more. "I can only be hurt by holy weapons, which you have none."

Magus reveals a fanged grin. "Your arrogance will be your downfall. For I have such a weapon!" He flings his cape aside to expose a brilliantly glowing sword.

Ganon staggers backwards as he shields his eyes from the intense light. "What is that?!"

Lucca immediately recognizes the sword Magus holds. "Tis the-"

"-Masamune?! How did you get that sword?!" Crono incredulously asks.

"From your amphibian friend," Magus simply replies. "I asked him to lend it to me. He accepted, after I showed my power to the creatures inhabiting the sword." Letting the flat of the blade lie against his left palm, Magus admires the Masamune. "This sword was crafted by Melchior, completed by the infernal Mammon Machine, and perfected once more by its creator. I remember how strong this blade was when I was attacked in my castle. My defenses melted away with each strike I felt, and the blade could have been my end." Magus grips the hilt, rests the sword by his side, and raises his eyes to the recovering Ganon. "Now, you shall taste the fury of the kingdom of Zeal! Prepare for the void!"

"Incredible! Magus is going to use the Masamune against Ganon, but will it be the equalizer?" Brock inquires.

"I've seen what the Masamune can do, firsthand, Brock. If it can cut Lavos, then it certainly can scratch that pig's hide. Ganon slams the trident into the ground to no avail. Magus floats up and casts Black Hole! The giant pig is resisting the pull of Magus' spell and will try to skewer the wizard again. Ganon's attack was slowed by the influence of the Black Hole, and Magus swoops in to-"

Ganon's deafening roar of pain drowns out what Lucca was about to say. Magus had cut off the pig's right hand. (or is it hoof?) The body part crashes near the edge of the ring, away from Ganon. Magus joins it after he is swatted from the air by Ganon's left hand. Purple mist begins to rise from the screaming pig as he slowly shrinks in size and becomes more human-like in appearance. The roar becomes a cry as Ganondorf clutches the stump where his right hand used to be. The Gerudo King rises in fury as he begins to cast a spell with his one good hand, but Magus manages to raise a hand and call out, "Dark Matter!" The same spell that had little effect on Ganon overwhelms Ganondorf, and he falls to the ring floor.

Ref-Bot finally lowers the personal force barrier he had hid behind for the duration of the match to count-out the former King of Evil. Ganondorf's hand dissolves into purple mist, and a single rotating golden triangle appears above where it once was. Link and Zelda reverently identify it as, "The Triforce of Power."

The triangle approaches the heavily breathing Magus before it stops in front of him. "Be gone from me," Magus harshly tells it, his reflection on its golden surface. "I have no need of more power."

"Not even to help fulfill your deepest wish?" the singular part of the Triforce speaks back.

At this, Magus' reflection is replaced by an image ingrained at the forefront of his memory. The wizard is short of breath as he sees who he has devoted his life to find. "Schala!"

"You can find her... if you so desire. When the three parts of the Triforce are united, the dreams of mortal men may become reality. Do you wish to find your sister?"

Driven by his life-long quest, Magus answers, "Yes."

"Thou art worthy of the Triforce of Power. Accept its blessing." The golden triangle descends onto Magus, who is momentarily engulfed in a bright glow. Upon looking on the back of his right gloved hand, the set of triangles that Ganondorf had now belonged to him. The mage could feel the newfound power starting to flow through his blood, but he knows that even it couldn't help him recover instantaneously from his victory.

"Winner: Magus."

Just as Ref-Bot announces the result of the match, Magus falls on his knees as he turns to face the Hero of Time and the princess of Hyrule. A golden aura, which he couldn't see before, shines from the back of their hands. The image of his lost older sister flashes once again before his eyes as he softly utters, "Schala, wait for me," before he collapses to the ground.

Brock and Lucca are momentarily speechless after witnessing what they never even dreamed could happen in the epic battle. Lucca is the first to give a reaction, "Folks, what we just saw was the Triforce of Power being absorbed into Magus' being. The ring area has been completely devastated, and both fighters are going to need serious medical attention. One more so than the other."

A sober Brock adds, "We said this match would be one of the most memorable, and we were right. Vs. Mode will take a break for messages. I think we all need it. Be right back."

----

As they watch Crono carry Magus away slowly and the Ganondorf being carried out on a stretcher, the holders of the other two pieces of the Triforce begin to wonder. When Magus looked at them after he received the piece of the Triforce, they felt the same bond with the Zeal prince as when Ganondorf held the Triforce of Power. Link's mind is filled with so many questions, and he turns to the one he hopes could answer them. "Zelda, what does this mean?"

The Triforce of Wisdom glows as Zelda clasps her hands together and closes her eyes, as if in prayer. A minute passes before her gentle blue eyes meet Link's. The Hero of Time is normally calmed upon gazing into the princess's eyes, but her fear and her gasp cause him to involuntarily take a step back. "Link, the Triforce is in danger of falling into evil hands again."

"But the Triforce of Power was already in evil hands. Why should we be so afraid of that?"

"No, Link. I meant the complete Triforce."

Link's eyes widen. "Hold on. Are you telling me that someone could-?"

"If Ganondorf could lose the Triforce of Power so easily, then the same goes for the other parts! We have to diligently guard our parts of the Triforce, lest someone here decides to repeat what happened in the Golden Land."

The boy in green runs his hand through his head. "That's just great. Not only do we have to watch out for our opponents, but we also have to be careful about anyone wanting the Triforce." Link sighs. "This tournament just a little less fun and a lot more treacherous. Magus is going to fight me in the next round, and I have to win the Triforce of Power back. Maybe if we have them all, everyone will be safe."

"Yes, that would be our best course of action. Now, we need to get to Ganondorf."

Zelda heads for the exit, but Link stops her by placing a hand on her shoulder and turning her back around. "Why?!"

"Link! Without the Triforce of Power, Ganondorf is mortal. I know he has done horrible things in the past, but he needs our help now. Plus, he knows the Triforce of Power better than both of us. He could give us information that could make it easier for you to obtain it."

Link sighs again at Zelda's logical reasoning. "I still don't like it, but as you wish, Princess." The two are sure of only one thing as they left the stadium. Ganondorf had lost more than his match.

Bonus!

Megaman sits in the lobby of the stadium, looking over his sub-weapons for their daily inspection.

"Let's see..."

A potted plant gets frozen in ice.

"Ice Slasher, check!"

The same potted plant bursts into flames.

"Atomic Fire, check!"

Then the flames get extinguished as the plant finds itself getting blown by strong winds.

"Wind Storm, check!"

This is followed with a metallic zing, and the plant falls over in half.

"Shadow Blades, check!"

The sound of footsteps walking away from the plant is heard, and if the thing can sigh in relief, it would have done so right then and there.

And then it explodes in many, many pieces.

"Drill Bomb, check! Looks like everything's in order. Hmm? What's this?"

The blue bomber squints at his sub-weapon list, just to make sure he's not seeing things. "A new weapon? The Ressetti Rant? Looks like something I got from the last battle. Let's see what this does."

The robotic boy turns a shade of brown, and he suddenly felt angry, so very angry. He knows the entire world is against him and he wants to lash back at it. He wants to scream, to shout and to generally verbally assault anyone and everyone. May woe befall the first person he sees, just like the one that just entered the lobby.

"You! Pretty boy! I know what you're thinking! 'Oh no, here comes poor little Megaboy, prancing all over the place, pointing his little pea shooter at everything, killing cute harmless little bunnies and puppies, yeah well I can take him, he's just a little kid who goes after poor defenseless animals after all'. Feh! Feh I say! I spit at your general direction and the way you look down on poor Megaman! You think I can't take down my opponents huh? 'Oh no, Megaman almost got killed by a stupid mole!' 'Oh no, Megaboy's going to get beaten by a prissy princess who gets kidnapped every other day!' 'Oh no, Megaboy's going to get beaten by a stupid flea-infested ape!' 'Oh no, Megaboy's going to get beaten by a friggin' moron in a stupid Hawaiian shirt!' Well I say, SCREW YOU! You think I can't fight? Well, I can fight, I tell you. I can really fight! I've taken down dragons! I've taken down a large putty thing! I've taken down a friggin' death star wannabe, and I sure as heck can take you! C'mon pretty boy, put them up! This little kid's going to take you down and whip you around like a redheaded stepchild! C'mon, bring it! I'm going to pwn your behind! Bring out your big poking stick and try to hit me! C'mon! C'mon!"

As the blue robot pantomimes a boxer, Sephiroth stares with one eyebrow raised before he walks out of the room, shaking his head in amusement and disbelief. "You are a very strange little boy..."

Megaman stops in mid-rant as he runs out of weapon energy. His mouth stays open for a minute or two as realization on what he just did dawns on him.

"Okay! That's it! That's the last time I test my new weapons in public!"
