GCB Fanfics: Vs. Mode

Vs. Mode - Interlude: Maximillian's First Round Wrap-Up

The scene opens in an empty Skull Stadium. Well, actually it's not quite empty as there is a lone boy sitting at the announcer's desk.

"The first round of the GCB has come to an end. Hello, my name is Max, and I'll be doing a review of everything that has gone on in this tournament. Brock and Lucca were feeling a little guilty for not giving me a part in the last set of matches, so they let me do this instead. First, we know how the individual characters have done, but what about the teams? Here is the complete list, with their team record next to them."

"So there we have it. Tri-Force is making an expected strong showing, along with Team Mega, Chrono Trigger, the Sonic Team, and the always dangerous Double-F. The seventh squad especially is showing no signs of weakness after their impressive showing last year. Those who didn't have a team to rely on, mostly gunfighters, did not fare well at all in this competition, but two of the teams didn't even register a single win. Golden Sun showed it had potential, while the Nookies probably shouldn't come back next year.

"Looking ahead to the second round, we should see plenty of blowouts from the big names such as the defending champion, but we also have some close calls. One match that jumps out at me is Bowser vs. Yoshi. Both are from Team N and have faced each other often in past melees. This should be one heck of a grudge match.

"Another intriguing battle will be between seventh squad leader Cloud against tenth squad member Auron in an intra-team match. Cloud showed off his strength by wiping the floor with CATS, but will he be willing to take down his teammate in the same way?

"The Zero vs. Sonic match is also on a lot of people's minds. Zero dispatched last year's surprise fighter, Scorpion, fairly easily, but he will have a tough time going against a spastic pinball in Sonic.

"And what about his counterpart, Shadow? One of the biggest surprises, so far, he goes up against powerhouse Mario, where it's expected that the man in red won't be an easy out like his twisted clone.

"Lastly, Ryu vs. Dante is shaping up to be a heated second round showdown. Both of them put up convincing wins against their opponents, and they will now face each other for the right to move on to the Sweet Sixteen.

"The tournament has had its ups and its downs during the first 32 battles. With half of the matches over, the competition will be more intense, and the fighting even fiercer. Let's hope that there won't be anymore serious incidents as the GCB rolls on. I'm Max, and that's it for this first round recap. See you in the second round!"
