GCB Fanfics: Vs. Mode

Vs. Mode - Sora vs. Aeris

The scene opens high above a somewhat normal city. A large, building sits in what looks like the city's center as the camera zooms downward. Upon closer inspection, the residents look fairly human as well, except for the security bots walking around with the GUN logo stamped on their chests. The camera zooms past them, through an entrance, and into the arena surrounded by the sea of spectators.

"We are live on Pay-Per-Play, coming from Station Square Center, where the GameFAQs Great Character Battle II continues!" The camera pans back to the announcer's desk. "Hello again, and welcome to Vs. Mode! I'm Brock, and she's our mistress of the mechanical, Lucca! The GCB rolls onward with four matches from the bottom half of the East Division."

Lucca jumps in, "But first, we promised you, the viewers, an update on those injured last week. CATS was released and sent on his way, incoherent as ever. Ness, however, is still undergoing treatment. He was transferred back to Onett Hospital, where doctors and nurses are watching him around the clock. Our best wishes to Ness and his family."

"They certainly are," Brock pauses before continuing. "Tonight's first match may just bring tears to your eyes. There is no other way to explain it. Two friends will have to put aside their friendship for one battle to see which of them will advance in the GCB."

Simple and Clean begins to play as Sora and Aeris, along with all of the other competitors, who had a role in Kingdom Hearts, walk in to a storm of cheers. "Our first match of the night is very special, indeed. Sora recently starred in Kingdom Hearts, which featured many Double-F members in incredible cameos, one of them being Aeris. The girl is a star in her own right for her part in Double-F's seventh squad, but the emotions will definitely be flowing tonight as two allies now face off against each other."

Cloud, Squall, Tidus, and even Sephiroth stand at relative compass points, while Sora and Aeris smile and shake hands in the center of the ring before moving away to their respective starting squares. "None of my analysis will be able to do this match justice. Both of them deserve to win just for their willingness and courage to fight. Here's Ref-Bot to start what should be a memorable battle."

"Players, to your positions. Player 1, ready?"

Sora wields his Ultima Weapon. "Ready."

"Player 2, ready?"

Aeris brandishes her Princess Guard. "Ready."

"Combatants ready. Raise force barriers. Match 13, Sora vs. Aeris. 3, 2, 1... fight!"

"Power's on; game's started! Sora begins by rushing in and taking swings at Aeris. He connects with a few before his opponent slips away to cast Fire 3!"

"Sora got burnt, but he's still moving pretty fast. He tries another close-up attack, but Aeris parries the blows with her staff. Both of these fighters have strong healing spells, so it could be a while before we finally have a winner."

"The boy steps back to launch Ars Arcanum, which nails Aeris. Sora follows up with a devastating Rangarok! Aeris has taken some heavy damage, but she's still on her feet. She dodges a Strike Raid and an Aerial Sweep before she finally puts some distance between herself and Sora."

"The Ancient looks like she is about to activate her Limit Break, Great Gospel. That would put Sora at a serious disadvantage against a fully recovered and temporarily invincible fighter."

"Sora breaks into a run to try and stop her, but it looks like he's too late. Aeris begins to glow as she- CASTS ULTIMA!" The entire ring area is consumed by a green hemisphere of raw power, and the force barriers visibly bend as they try to contain one of the most powerful spells in the multiverse. The effects of the spell subside, leaving behind a huge cloud of dust.

"Aeris fooled everyone as she looked like she was going to use Great Gospel. Instead, she released one of the most potent spells there is, Ultima! We won't know what the result of her attack is until this dust cloud subsides. The dust is clearing now... and we can see that the four outside the ring were undeniably phased by Aeris' unexpected gambit. But what about the two competitors?"

The cloud finally vanishes completely to reveal Aeris, still standing, and Sora, laid out on the ground. Ref-Bot had put up his own personal force barrier just in time. Now seeing the downed Sora, the ref administers the ten-count.

"Winner: Aeris."

Aeris kneels next to her friend. "Thank you, for doing your best."

Sora smiles up at her. "I wouldn't be happy with myself if I didn't."

Aeris nods as she stands up again. She thrusts her hands up into the air and calls out, "Great Gospel!" The non-destructive Limit Break instantly renews both of their bodies and their spirits. Sora gets up and lifts Aeris' arm up to proclaim her victory, and the crowd responds with almost deafening applause.

"Sora and Aeris certainly didn't disappoint with strong moves and an even stronger friendship," Brock comments. "Don't go away, folks! More of Vs. Mode, after this!"
