Tryout Fic 1

As two blades come to a head and meet each other, the powers of their swords combine to send out sparks between the two sword duelers. One steps back and throws his sword at the dark figure, who simply delivers an arcing strike to the katana sending it back to its user, the red haired boy grabs it by its hilt and puts it in its scabbard.

Suddenly he put his hand on the hilt and took out the katana once more, this time it was shimmering a grand spectrum of colors. He rushed forward and swung at Squall, who had him blocked. Both fighters whirled around and brought their blades against one another once more as blue sparks flew from their swords. Their bodies squared as they struggled for the advantage in their battle. Suddenly Crono saw an advantage and backflipped out of the way as Squall's blade came forward and slashed fiercely at him from the pent up momentum. Crono side stepped the swing and with a flick of his wrists held his katana an inch from Squall's throat.

"I believe that is all for today Squall." Crono smiled curtly, as quickly as he had put the katana there, it was removed. Crono bowed his head to Squall who stood up straight. Squall let out what most would believe was a grimace, when in fact it was one of his half smiles.

"So what does that make it? seven to four in your favor, Crono?"

"Sounds about right. I am going to go see Glenn, catch you later." Crono set off in a run. When he was out of sight Squall gasped for air as he hit the ground on a knee. He let a hand travel to his throat and a bit of blood was on his hand when he examined it. "Talented fighter, great control of his sword, but I really wish that kid could keep the air around that thing from cutting me open. That is the second time this week..." With that Squall headed to the infirmery to get healed up.

It was a quiet enough day, matches were on hold for the sweet 16 break, everyone was taking time to train, or eat, or even sit alone and act moody.

"MOMA MIA! Where did I put my meatballs! My sauce can-a not be-a complete without it!" Mario searched his mess for a room for his precious meatballs. He had them just last night as he had went to bed, but that is the price you pay for having a room filled with various items that can do mysterious things, more than likely including hiding or even eating meatballs. "If I-a can't find the meatballs then what is everyone supposed to eat? Oh dear this is a problem!" Mario moaned as he continued his search, tossing stars, red shells, and even a kart aside. Yoshi came into Mario's room to see what all the commotion was.

"Yoshi?" Was all he said as he turned his head side ways in thought. Mario turned around to see Yoshi standing there.

"Oh Yoshi! Maybe you-a could help-a me out! I seem to have misplaced my meatballs, would-a you know where that could be!" Mario looked on as Yoshi seemed to Squirm away from Mario heading back to where he came from.

Mario got a stern tone in his voice,"Yoshi? Did you eat my meatballs!? You-a better be honest!"

"Yoshi! Yoshi!" Yoshi nodded his head in shame. Mario came over to Yoshi and patted him on his head. "It's-a ok Yoshi, I do not blame you, I do not feed-a you enough-a! But still, next time could you keep yourself away from my sauce ingridients?" Yoshi nodded as Mario continued to pet him.

In the courtyard a picture of deadliness was sitting with his eyes closed deep in thought, yet still fully aware of his surroundings. He had been a little worried in his previous match with that Knuckles, he had never seen him so violent before. In fact, a lot of people had been more violent in the arena than he had known them to be before. Years before he had always been a strong and tough fighter but he had never seen that kind of aggression in him before. It had even seemed that the likable Tails had lost his mind in the match versus that loudmouthed man... Joe or whatever. Sonic remained cool as always..

Suddenly Snake whipped around and had his SOCOM out in a flash and pointed to the person behind him.

"No sneaking up behind you, is there Snake?" Samus let out a soft smile as Snake dropped his gun to his waist and reholstered it. Samus sat beside him and and lookeed at him with a hard glare, as if trying to read his mind.

"I suppose you have seen the changes going on in people?" Samus spoke in a barely audible voice.

"Yes, it is as if something is changing within them, making them more aggressive." Snake stared down at the ground.

"Holding a conversation and still deep in thought, just like you Snake." Samus let out a contained laugh. Snake looked as if he did not even hear her laughter.

"First it was Crono's opponent, that fur ball Conker. Then Payne went completely psychotic and almost killed Vercetti before Vercetti capped him. Following that Liquid went more off the deep end than usual. Then Chief's opponent, Crash was it?" Samus nodded at Snake's question. "Crash, who I always remember as a fun loving guy had an evil glare in his eyes, as if something was troubling his mind. Kong, I have never seen him go so insane before, he almost ripped that poor boy in half with his bare hands.. but that would have been better than what Sephiroth did to him I suppose." Samus shuddered at that. They both knew little about the happenings of last year, only that Cloud and Sephiroth had a grand battle in wich Cloud struck down Sephiroth. Ever since Sephiroth had stepped into the arena this year, he had made no effort to contain his fury. They had heard little of the way of mind games from him, only that he spent his time training fiercely. He had skewered Vivi within seconds of the start of the battle and tossed his body against the barrier, blood running down it as his lifeless body slid down to the floor.

"Lastly Knuckles, he almost had me there. Such raw aggression from a creature capable of such higher level thought, it was as if he had lost himself." Snake finished and lit a cigarette then proceeded to take a smoke from it.

"Is it possible Sephiroth is causing this?" Samus looked up at Snake.

"It would be all too easy to blame this on him. But I don't think it is him this time. Sephiroth has been too focused to try to pull any of his usual crap. But who does that leave? Maybe it was someone who already departed, leaving their plans behind. Maybe it is someone who we would never suspect, maybe it is no one's cause." Snake took another puff of his cigarette and threw it to the ground, where his waiting boot snuffed it out. Snake got up and headed to the hotel.

"Nice talking to you again Snake." Samus waved at him.

"You too Samus." Snake didn't bother to make any gestures or turn around as he made his way to his room.

"So old man, how does it feel to make it this far?" Cloud had been talking to himself, as usual, when Auron had seated himself next to him.

"No different than any other day Cloud. I feel my day is soon approaching as it is, and we will not get to see a rematch of our previous battle." Auron adjusted his shades after he finished speaking.

"I know what you mean, Sephiroth seems like a machine this year. It is not as if he is plotting, he is simply going all out on all of his opponents..." Cloud sounded a little worried, but only Auron couldv'e told the difference between his worried tone and his indifference one.

"Sephiroth has learned a valuable lesson in his time away from this dimension. He is respecting each and every one of his opponents. Not for who they are, but simply for the power they hold. He is leaving nothing hidden, he was defeated last year because his over confidence had clouded his mind and he thought that only Link could stand in his way, that you would be no problem. This year he will be much more difficult to defeat than last, I know my time is over, however I do not believe I shall go down as quickly as young master Vivi." Auron took a drink of his flask and stuffed it back into his coat.

"That is true enough, I have Squall to get past, which is no easy task. Defending a championship with so many high calibur opponents will prove very difficult in the long run. To do it once again I will have to defeat opponents that I defeated only with the aid of the Triforce last year, it won't be so easy this time." Cloud shook his head.

"Haha! Cloud, you should see yourself, it is as if you are scared stiff. From what I understand talking to that young elf boy, the triforce feeds off inner strength of the sign it represents. You have a lot of power Cloud, you should know this by now. You used it well last tournament I am told. But you are right, your path will not be easy, as it should be. Without challenge what is the point of trying? To be the best amongst weaklings or the weakest amongst Gods, I believe I know which one I would choose." Auron took off his shades and looked Cloud right in the eyes. "Stories end and stories begin, but there is always a story to tell." Auron put his glasses back on and stood up. Nodding his head at Cloud he turned around and walked off to ponder.

----------------------------------------

Link was playing his Ocarina, no particular tune really, just sitting in the grass, eyes closed playing a melody for anyone to hear. Much had transpired the previous year that he would like to forget, but he couldn't. He had betrayed every moral he had held dear to him for power and a chance to win. And for what? To lose anyway, as he so rightfully deserved. The things he did last year still made him shudder, even on a peaceful day such as this. He wondered who he was, and would others still look down on him. He hadn't even brought the mask this year, he would not risk himself turning to the darkness once more. A few of the returning fighters had greeted him coldly, Cloud welcomed him back with a handshake, which is the best he could have hoped for. He didn't think he could win this year, he was taking it too lightly on his opponents, and he knew this. But he didn't want to have any more blood on his hands, not again. Ganondorf could be the exception, thankfully. He deserved no pity and no one looked down on him for striking him down. This round he would face Yoshi, a dangerous dinosaur who was nice enough though, he wouldn't harm Mario's pet too badly.

Suddenly Link got a chill up his spine, he put the Ocarina away and stood up, looking all around him. He saw a shadow on the ground and looked up. There hovering above him was Sephiroth. "Hello Link, nice to see you are well." Sephiroth smiled as he touched down to the ground as lightly as he could.

"What do you want Sephiroth, interested in another one of your pathetic mind games?" Link's words were venomous as a good natured person could make them.

"Now now my young friend, I have long since left the mind games behind, they are what kept me from winning this tournament last year. I wasn't focused enough, I was too busy assuming I was superior to everyone to bother to train, or even take most of my opponents seriously. However young Link, I shall not make the same mistakes twice. You defeated me two years ago, your courage and heart are outstanding! I will admit this, you outlasted me in a way I didn't think was possible, and it seems you have returned to form, marvelous. I have awaited this Link because I want to kill you myself. Which is why I am here, I am going to tell you to your face, no games, that you and I will meet in the finals of this tournament and I will defeat you." As Sephiroth finished he drew the Masamune.

"What do yuo want to do, weaken me now Sephiroth? I am not so easily weakened by the likes of you!" Link reached behind his back and grabbed the Master Sword from its scabbard.

"No Link, I am going to show you while you returned to form, I have... improved." As he finished the last he glided forward and with whip like motion he struck out at Link. Link readied his sword into a blocking position as the Masamune engaged the Master Sword. However within seconds the Masamune had the upper hand as it was forcing Link's sword to almost cut into him. Link tried to whirl around but Sephiroth was ready delivering a hard blow with the hilt of his sword into Link's head driving him to the ground. As link tried to get up the tip of the Masamune was touching his throat.

"See Link, as I said before, I have been working on my swordsmanship quite a bit. There is a new champion in this dimension, and it is me." Sephiroth withdrew the blade from Link's throat and spread his black wing behind him, with a blink of the eye he set off, within seconds he could not be seen.

Link was left breathing heavily from the short encounter, wondering what just happened.
