Shake and Oddity's CYOA

Western Border Territory

“Crono needs backup immediately, especially in Romaji, that place is a deathtrap!” Cloud exclaimed, “CAM will just have to wait until we have the resources to deal with it!”

Auron looked miffed but he said nothing. Orlandu, on the other hand, was of a different mindset, “CAM waits for no man. Have a little faith in your friends, Cloud. In the meantime we should be facing the real threat here, the Alliance, not Kefka!”

“I understand your point, Orlandu,” Cloud went on, “but if we shut down CAM at the cost of losing our friends in Romaji, then the Resistance will be dead. We’re in this to win a war, not a battle.”

Orlandu bowed his head, “As you wish…”

Edge started to organize things, “Alright, first we need to find Wedge and give him his orders. Then we’ll just pick up the flyer and we’re gone…”

Sabin spoke up, “Hey Cloud, do you or Auron know any healing magic? Me and Vivi are sort of in need here…”

Sabin’s burns were no problem for Cloud, he was able to heal those right up. Vivi, on the other hand, was a different matter entirely.

Cloud just stared into Raziel’s arms at Vivi’s seemingly lifeless body, “I don’t know that I can cure him… But I’ll give it my best shot…”

It’s not going to work… Auron thought suddenly. He shook his head in confusion, What am I thinking…? It could work… Cloud’s skills are not insignificant… where did that come from? He tried to rationalize the thought away but a lingering doubt remained.

Cloud focused all the energy inside him into this one spell, sweat broke out on his brow, “Cure 3!”

Green light suffused Vivi’s body as Cloud clearly struggled to make the spell work. The green light intensified steadily, until its brilliance caused the others to look away. The spell reached its climax and then faded. Vivi seemed to remain unchanged as Cloud fell to his knees, gasping, “It’s too much… I can’t… Maybe if it were Aeris… but… I’m sorry…”

Edge grasped Cloud’s shoulder, “It’s alright, Cloud. You tried. Vivi will come out of it, sometimes he goes into these… regenerative periods, you just have to give him time. Let’s head out!”

The party geared up as Auron brooded. How did I know that? What was that sudden certainty…? Auron got up to join the rest of the party as they left. Another sudden flash of certainty struck him Vivi’s not going to make it… Auron tried to shrug it off That other time was just a fluke. These are things I simply cannot have any possible way of knowing…

Raziel felt something was wrong as he followed Edge on their way to finding Wedge. He couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was either, and that bugged him. Wait… is it Vivi? Is he getting warmer? Raziel shrugged it off, he was sure he was just imagining things…

CAM

Sigma was quivering with excitement! Today was his big day. Master Link was coming to survey the Lab and inquire about his progress. Sigma had made a lot of progress. He was going through all of the last minute checks of the Lab systems and personnel. And much more importantly, the projects!

I’m ready, I dare him to find a flaw in my work, it’s impossible…

Everything seemed to be in perfect order for Link’s arrival. Link’s arrival was not proclaimed with trumpets and fanfare, this was purely business, not an occasion for frivolous gimmicks. Though the elf was a bit overweight, his piercing gaze saw all, and his stride bespoke a power that nobody could suspect from his appearance.

“How is the MC project progressing, Sigma?” Link got right to the point.

Sigma grinned, he knew how important this project was to Link, “If you’ll just follow me, I can show you…”

Sigma led Link through the winding passages of the Lab. Finally they came to a window. Through the window was what seemed to be a man on a table. His features were hard to distinguish because the room was poorly lit. There seemed to be some… mechanical enhancements… added on to various parts of his body.

“Behold, Master Link, this is Master Chief 028. I have successfully inputted Mark’s mind into the head implant that was originally meant to be an AI, “Sigma gloated of his accomplishment, “Master Chief 028 is the pinnacle of human perfection. His reflexes are 10 times as good as any other man’s. His endurance is almost limitless. And already imbedded in his brain is the knowledge of how to operate just about any weapon we can create. He’s simply the fastest, strongest, most superior life form ever to walk this world.”

Link seemed pleased, but he still seemed to hold some reservations, “Why isn’t he up and about? You said the merging was successful.”

Sigma was ready with the answer, “We just completed the merging earlier today. Currently 028 is initializing all of Master Chief’s systems. Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific, the laboratory part of the merging is complete. 028 is still trying to synchronize with Master Chief’s body. I anticipate that by the end of the day the synchronization should be completed. You can be sure that I will send him directly to you as soon as he ahh… ‘awakens’!”

Link nodded in approval, “Very good, Sigma, but what about the Process? Have you perfected it? Fox was none too pleased with your request for his most talented assassin. And truth be told, if your experiment managed to get him killed, I won’t be very pleased either. That man was fanatically loyal to me and he was very good at what he did. I know you’ve been experimenting with this Process of yours for awhile now and though I couldn’t fathom why you suddenly wanted to try it out on such a valuable warrior, I decided to give you this one request. I hope you have not disappointed…”

Sigma was filled to bursting with glee. He beckoned for Link to follow as he immediately went into the details, “For years I have been experimenting with the chemical I have come to call the Process. Countless subjects were failures. Finally I felt that I had perfected the Process, but the results continually proved me wrong. In all cases the subjects died. Finally, I was forced to conclude that it was not the Process that was flawed, but the subjects. I decided that somebody with a stronger mind and body might be able to withstand the Process. I was right, though the subject responds to a different name now.” Sigma stopped in front of another window. Inside it was completely dark except for a spotlight, which illuminated a meditating man. He was clothed all in black, his hands, his feet, even his entire head was shrouded in black. Sigma was grinning as he spoke into an intercom, “Come greet Master Link, Shadow!” Shadow got up and strode in to the darkness that surrounded him. Link looked at the door to the left of the window.

“I am here,” Link was surprised to hear the voice coming from behind him and turned around quickly. Some shadows stood behind the man as he looked at Link with apparent interest.

Link was immensely puzzled, “How did he-“

“Shadow has the ability to, shall we say, travel along darkness,” Sigma broke in, “This was a totally unexpected side effect of the Process. I didn’t even know about it until one day he got tired of testing and simply walked through a shadow and appeared behind me, just as he did to you. But that is not all. He is a wondrous blur in combat. His skills with that blade of his are unmatched. He also forges interesting throwing weapons that are enchanted with various elemental spells. With his shadow-walking ability he is the perfect dagger in the dark. I am only glad that the Process also reinforced his loyalty, otherwise I am not sure any sentient thing would remain in this Lab.”

Link smiled, “Sigma, I am very impressed. Please show me more…”

“Shadow, we are done,” the ninja disappeared into the shadows as quickly as he had come, “This way, sir. This next project is an adaptation of the Process. Remember that blue creature you sent me about 3 days ago?” Link nodded as they strode down the corridors, “Well, I thought it would be brilliant if we could make the Process work on him. But he provided a whole new challenge. He was not loyal to you at all and he was not human. I sampled his DNA and found that he had a very resilient immune system. That first day was spent altering the Process and running simulations as I tried to find a way to make it all come together.” Sigma stopped in front of a door and accessed a screen beside it, “I finally decided to start with massive irradiation to excite his natural processes and make them go horribly awry.”

Suddenly the screen lit up, it showed a room seen from the overhead perspective. Two of the walls had giant circular pads on them, these were transmitters. The room’s only door slid open and a spikey blue creature was hurled into the room. The door slid shut at the very instant at which the blue creature crossed the threshold.

“HEY! Don’t think you can keep me locked up in here!” Sonic wailed, “The moment you open that door I’ll be out of here, you idiots!” Sonic was trying to hide his frustration. I won’t let them keep me here… Sonic rammed the door with his head. This only caused him a sizable headache. Sonic started to feel a little woozy, but hitting the door shouldn’t have thrown him that much. His head was made of pretty hard stuff. Sonic didn’t understand it, he was starting to feel very strange. In an act of desperation, Sonic turned into a ball and started revving himself up. He just had to bust that door down and then he could be free. Sonic let all his speed go straight at the door, again he was rebuffed. Now Sonic could feel himself weakening What the hell are they doing to me? Sonic tried to get up the energy to have another go at the door, but he could feel his strength leaving him at an incredible rate. Then the pain started and Sonic screamed.

Link and Sigma watched as the creature curled up into a fetal position after the screaming was over, “We kept him in there for about two hours. After this point he just stayed like that for the duration. This had the anticipated effect. With all of his natural defenses misfiring, he was ready for the Process. Over the next two days I injected him with six doses of the Process. Each dose was a little bit different, altering him in different ways each time.” The screen switched to the creature strapped to an experimentation bed.

Sonic was hazy. He didn’t know how many times that cruel robot with the cold eyes had given him the drugs. All he knew was that they hurt! And not physically, either, (though they did hurt physically) but they hurt on the inside. As if each time they dosed him another part of himself died. He heard the door open and he froze in fear. Maybe it’s just an assistant or something, please… don’t let it be… but it was. The robot with the cold eyes had his needle ready. Sonic struggled against his bonds but it was useless. The robot injected whatever the substance was into his wrist. Sonic’s eyes bulged, and though he did not know it they were bloodshot. Crippling waves of agony spread throughout his body, but that wasn’t what really hurt. Another part of him was changing and the pain was indescribable.

Those same cold eyes were alight with excitement as Sigma explained more of his experiment to Link, “Now he was ready for the final stage of his treatment. You see, this was a totally different transformation from the other subject. This had to alter his mind heavily. The drugs did a lot of that work, but by the end of the injections a significant portion of his mind was still his own. I suppose you could call it the core of what he was, the last stand of his mind against my Process. I had anticipated this, and put some latent drugs into his system along with the Process. The final stage of this creature’s treatment was to return to the irradiation room, where those latent drugs could be fully activated and put to use, washing away the old creature and putting in the new. The results of the last part of the treatment were… stunning to say the least.”

Sonic rose to his hands and knees after having been hurled into the room. It’s this room again… THIS room… Sonic was shaking, his mind was all over the place, he couldn’t recognize himself. He didn’t remember his friends or his enemies. Somehow, though, he knew that he was going to end very soon. It was this room, where it all started. He was going to end here, not die, just end. Somehow this truth overwhelmed him. NEVER! I’ll kill them all… they will die for what they’ve done to me… Sonic shrieked in rage. He felt a transformation come over his body. Energy seemed to gather to him and he rose into the air as his blue spikes turned golden. Rage suffused his being as he flew at the door, punching it with all of his might. The door was significantly dented. Blow after blow, Sonic rained destruction from his fists. Sonic prepared his last blow for the beaten up door. One more blow was all it would take to tear the thing out of his way. Then there was indescribable pain. Sonic collapsed to his knees, tears streaming from his eyes. He was too late. He had one last thought before he ended, “Knuckles…”

Sigma concluded, “As far as I can tell, he realized that he was about to change. And that realization caused him so much rage that he used the powers of the Process to try and break free. Luckily the latent reformation drugs kicked in before he got out. This all happened yesterday. Here are the results!” Sigma opened the door. Out walked a creature, obviously of the same type as the blue one, but this one was black. It held a certain elegance about it that the blue one never had.

“What are you?” Link asked.

“I am the ultimate life form. Call me Shadow.” The creature responded.

Link raised his eyebrows, “Wasn’t the other one called Shadow, Sigma?”

Sigma assumed a sort of puzzled expression, “This I cannot explain. I can only think that it is a result of the Process. But as far as I can tell there is no logical reason that both should call themselves Shadow. This is just something I have accepted as an odd fluke inherent to the experiment.”

Link looked Shadow over, “Who do you serve?”

“I serve you, Master Link…” There was no hesitation.

“Excellent, return to whatever you were doing…” Link was very pleased.

Sigma knew that he was doing well in Link’s eyes and he was very excited about what was about to come next, “There was one other pet project of mine that bore unexpectedly ripe fruit. I didn’t know exactly what to expect when I went into this experiment. Let me explain. I managed to acquire a green stone known only as a Materia. I did tests on it and discovered that it’s magic powers were unlike anything I had ever seen. I briefly thought about handing it over to Fox’s military for use, but then I had a terrific idea. I conceived of a plan to merge this “Materia” with a person. It took my months to isolate the most powerful genes in humans for magic users. Once I found that out, I simply did a little creative splicing and created the person. Then I managed to merge the Materia with the fetus at birth using highly advanced techniques I won’t go into now. I accelerated her growth of course (the subject is a woman) until she was full grown. I also made her a genetic prodigy, in the short month that she has been alive she has already acquired the intelligence and dexterity of a normal human adult her age.” He explained all this as they took the twists and turns of the Lab.

Finally he stopped at a training room, “Celes, please end your training session and come meet Master Link.”

Celes was a stunningly beautiful woman with long blond hair and a snow white cape. She came out of the training station and stood at attention, “Celes please ready yourself for a demonstration of your unique ability.”

Celes drew her sword, it had many odd symbols all along the blade. She stared intently at Link, “Master Link, if you would, please cast a spell on her, any spell will do.”

Link looked at Sigma skeptically before casting his spell, “Din’s Fire!” A powerful spell of fire began to form and Celes just held her sword in front of her. One of the symbols on her sword began to glow a fiery red and even as the spell began to take affect it was sucked into the blade. Link just looked on, stunned.

“She has instinctive knowledge of those… runes she calls them… and with them she can absorb any spell cast on the battlefield, she actually gains strength from each spell! The best part is, that no magic will work if she doesn’t wish it too. Speed altering spells, Healing spells, Offensive spells, Status altering spells… none of these can be put into effect if she does not will it. Best of all, even while she does this she can cast her own powerful spells. Ice spells seem to be her forte but she can also heal very well. She can effectively make herself the only magic user on the battlefield. She is fairly skilled with her sword as well. I was very pleased with the results of this experiment, that is all Celes, you may go back to your training,” Sigma released her back to her testing.

Link watched her go with wide eyes, “That’s amazing! Tell me, can she selectively use this ability. What I mean is, can she cancel out the enemy’s magic while letting us keep our own?”

Sigma’s smile disappeared, “Sadly, no. If she’s going to turn it on, she turns it all the way on. I’ve tried to get her to do it differently but she tells me that it just doesn’t work that way.”

Link smirked, “That’s alright, Sigma. The fact that she can do it at all is a miracle. But let’s move on, what about your most recent projects. I am expecting great things from those…”

Sigma’s grin reappeared instantly, “Yes, well, we are still in the developmental stages for the Twin Terror Project. But I have already finished Robo’s blueprints and Zero’s are not far behind. I anticipate that within the week they should be finished…”

Link’s smile broadened, “Excellent work, Sigma. I am surprised you have made this much progress. It seemed to take CATS forever to do anything… I am very pleased with you. Keep up this phenomenal work and you may find yourself going up in the Alliance!” And with that Link strolled down the corridor, back to his throne.

These projects, they are nothing compared to me, Link… Just you wait… Sigma laughed.

In The Air

Inside the flyer the silence was deafening. As soon as they had gotten on the flyer, Raziel had announced that Vivi was getting warmer. Edge had shrugged it off at first and Cloud had taken them into the air. Raziel laid the small form out on the table. The inside of the flyer was set up like a meeting hall. There was a long table with many chairs and on the wall was what seemed to be a display screen for mapping out tactical strikes or displaying other data. Edge had appeared calm and collected at first, bantering with the rest of the thieves, but every so often he would go and put a hand underneath Vivi’s hat. As soon as Auron had heard Raziel’s proclamation he had gone off to a remote corner to brood. Finally, as Vivi’s external temperature continued to grow, Edge gave up all pretense of being alright. He stood by his friend’s side and held his hand., praying for his recovery. Silence reigned.

“I-I think he’s going… the warmth has spread to his hands… If you want to say anythi-“ Edge’s voice cracked. He stared at the ground, obviously trying to fight back tears. Raziel, Orlandu, and Sabin walked up to the table to stand next to Vivi. They were saying their final goodbyes.

Auron remained in the corner with his head in his hands. He’s going to die… Auron had accepted this as soon as Raziel had spoken. He had no idea how this knowledge came to him. This was not the source of his discomfort though. The not knowing he could deal with, what was really niggling at his mind was the fact that he felt there was something more. He could feel that there was something more, he only had half of the puzzle and there was something else. It was driving him nuts, not knowing what that other half was. This was something that was just beyond his grasp, some knowledge that he should have but didn’t.

He’s going to die… I know this… I understand this… but… why is there something more? What is the other half of this thought… I don’t understand. Auron withdrew his hands from his face and looked at them helplessly. His eyes stopped on the three golden triangles on his right hand. I can heal him…

Auron was up in a flash and racing towards the table, “Step aside!” The mourning thieves were in his way.

4 pairs of eyes turned to him instantaneously, he was intruding on their grief. Edge stared at him coldly, “Excuse me?”

No time… Auron raised his right hand, palm towards the thieves. His hand was illuminated in a dazzling golden radiance and the four thieves were hurled to the other side of the flyer by an invisible force.

“Everything okay back there?” Cloud shouted from the cockpit.

“We’re fine!” Auron shouted back as he placed his hand on Vivi’s chest, bathing the little mage in the Triforce’s golden light.

Edge rose quickly, “I won’t let you kill him…” He began to unsheathe his katana but was stopped by a strong hand on his wrist.

“Why should he kill the mage, now, Edge?” Orlandu broke in, “He was already dying. Besides… just look at that light!”

And Edge did look. There was something true and pure about the light of the Triforce, something undeniably right about the Triforce’s healthy glow.

Auron withdrew his hand, it was done. Amazing… I don’t even know how I did that… this Triforce… Do I truly deserve to wield such a power?

Vivi’s orbs emerged from the darkness. I should be dead… Then Vivi saw Auron. To Vivi’s eyes an incredible golden aura radiated from the warrior. He’s different… why? Not knowing exactly what he was doing, Vivi’s hands went to Auron’s right fist, and gently opened it, “Heaven’s Mercy!” Vivi’s eerily echoing voice reverberated throughout the room, “Thank you for saving me, I never thought to see a wielder of the Triforce in my lifetime.”

Edge and the others looked on in shock, Edge snapped out of it first, “You… healed him! But how…”

Auron looked at them, “I don’t know…. But I sensed that it was no normal healing. I don’t think I can heal physical wounds. What he had,” Auron nodded at Vivi, “was a wound of the mind. I still don’t understand how I did it though,”

Raziel spoke up, “Such is the way of the Triforce. You cannot learn to use it. It mainly works through instinct.”

Vivi nodded. Silence reigned once again as the thieves stood in awe.

Later

Cloud had been given the good news by Sabin and was in a pretty good mood when he saw the fire. In the dark wasteland of Romaji a single light shone a little ways away from the Arena. “Alright, people, we’re landing! Hold on!” Cloud landed the flyer effortlessly next to the camp. Crono and Magus greeted the party as they disembarked. Cloud made introductions all around, “Hey, Crono, where’s the rest of your bunch?” Cloud inquired.

Crono’s smile was forced, “Samus and Aeris are in that tent over there…”

“What about Snake and Ry-“

“I think our newfound friends should go meet them. Magus, introduce them to the others. Auron! Cloud! Please come to my tent for a debriefing…”

Cloud could tell he was treading on dangerous ground as he followed Crono into his tent. Once they were inside, he could see that Crono was seething inside.

Crono’s voice snapped like a whip, “Where’s Ganondorf?”

Cloud remained calm, “He’s dead.”

“I heard he had a second in command… Zidane?” Crono inquired.

Cloud began to sweat, “I killed him.”

Crono’s eyes burned, “Where did you send Squall, Knuckles, and Ryu?”

Cloud’s mouth felt dry, “They died.”

Crono exploded, “WHAT!? Do you mean to tell me that not only did you not get Ganondorf OR Zidane, but that you managed to get over half your team KILLED!? THIS IS AN OUTRA-“

“Were you there?” Auron’s voice cut through Crono’s tirade like a blade through silk.

Crono wasn’t done, “No… BUT THAT DOESN”T EXCU—“

“Did you see the catastrophe looming before us?” Auron was also far from done.

Crono persisted, “3 OF OUR M—“

“Were you a witness to the terrible carnage?” Crono finally calmed down, “Hear our side of the story before you judge, Crono.”

Crono had control of himself again, “So tell me…”

And Cloud did. He detailed everything from the rooftop disaster to the coming of the demon. Auron chipped in about the Triforce and Vivi’s miraculous healing, while showing Crono his palm.

When Auron was done, Cloud had only one question on his mind, “What about your party Crono. What’s happening here?”

So, Crono in turn detailed the Id disaster to Cloud. Ryu’s death, Aeris’ and Samus’ injuries, everything. Cloud’s eyes darkened upon hearing of Aeris’ critical injuries.

Auron, ever the insightful tactician, had this to offer after Crono’s recital, “What is our next move, Crono?”

Crono considered briefly, “Well, now that we have major backup, I think it’s safe to launch an assault on Kefka’s castle. Magus tells me that Schala is dead, but that doesn’t say anything about Sephiroth. When Snake comes back, we’ll make our move.”

Both Cloud and Auron nodded in agreement. Crono’s eyes went to the ground, “I owe you two an apology. I should’ve heard you out before shouting at you like that. I can see why things went as badly as they did… I’m sorry.”

Cloud couldn’t help but let a small chuckle escape him, “This is exactly why we’ll never tear ourselves apart like the thieves did. You, unlike Ganondorf, have the ability to apologize.”

They all got a fairly good laugh out of that. But Crono could see that Cloud was distracted, “Go on, get out of here, Cloud. Aeris will be very happy to see you.”

Cloud nodded in thanks and left the tent. Auron started to leave as well, but turned his head to say something before he left, “I know this is hard for you Crono. This place… these memories… yet despite it all you remain an exemplary leader. It’s times like this that I see why I follow you…” and then he was gone, and Crono could hear only the wind.

Yesterday, Maral Sector, Sephurst Stadium

Sephurst Sadium was once again what it had been, a reminder of all that had been lost. The volunteers didn’t know that the Resistance had evacuated the base, Crono had thought it would have drawn unnecessary attention to it.

The workers were grafting hard, finding some solace in the fact they were contributing to Link’s downfall in their own small way. None of the builders were broad shouldered but all were fit and tough. Hearty laughs and friendly pranks were their weapons against the famish and Link’s tyranny. Most of them had lived like this their entire lives, they didn’t know any better. They were fulfilled in the knowledge they provided for their family’s enough to keep them alive and pride in the knowledge they did so without collaborating with the Alliance.

Not everybody knew exactly what they were doing, just the leaders and frontmen. But their were rumors abound. Most did know the leaders were somehow involved with the Resistance, and their monthly pay-check enforced that suspicion. It was commonly known that Link didn’t fund the rebuild; Who else but the Resistance could pay a salary for so many?

It was just another ho-hum day for the builders, a day like man others. The bright side was that the sun was shining full force, and a lot of the men had brought their children to play in the grass that grew just outside the stadium. Wives with very little food and a lot of water spread out worn blankets on the field, and supplied what little they had to their men and children.

The women of Bhaktar were often the least fed, as the men needed their strength to earn their pay and no mother could keep food out of their children’s mouths. Still, these were relative happy times. A lot of the women often cursed the Resistance for interfering, causing Link to unleash his soulless androids to commit to another bloodbath. Most of the men however viewed them as hero’s fighting for their freedom.

A military flyer came gliding into view.......it was still just a dot, but everyone recognized the configuration of Link’s armed forces. The men sent their women to take their children home.

In the military flyer.

Fox Mcloud piloted the flyer as Max Payne sat in the passengers seat. The rest of the massive vehicle was a cargo hold, made to carry 200 battle-drones and 100 soldiers. Max Payne was feeling uneasy as he was about to commit himself to a new cause.....one that he didn’t feel comfortable with. He had gone too far to back out of it now, but his actions in the next hour would definitely seal his fate. “Just let me talk to the leaders first, Mcloud. I know them. “ Max said in his street-wise voice.

“No problem Max. Its you’re responsibility to make them cooperate. If they don’t, its my responsibility to carry out the Master’s orders.” Fox said. “And we’re on a mission, Max. Call me sir. “

“Will do, sir. “Max stated flatly. I just hope they’l talk. I know what these battle-droids can do. Max looked out of the window. They were approaching Sephurst Stadium. Christ, there are women and children down there. Look at ‘em run. And they’re running from me.

Max sighed. He thought back to his own wife and child. Mercilessly slaughtered while he was gathering information with Sam for the Resistance. No clue to who had done it or why, but it wasn’t hard to figure out. The rumors were on the streets , even after Sam had told him to keep his big mouth shut he still went off and told spectacular tales to his buddy’s and peers.

The Alliance paid handsomely for any and all info against people who helped the Resistance, and some of his friends were less trustworthy then they had seemed. He had only himself to blame. He found out who had betrayed him swiftly, and committed his first murder soon after. Then he joined the Resistance as a full-fledged member. He used to spit whenever traitors were even mentioned. And now.....I’m at the other side of the fence.....if this goes the wrong way, I will be the one who tore up those family’s. I have to make this work.

“I don’t want those women and children harmed in any case, Mcloud........sir.” Max said suddenly.

“Don’t step out of line, Max. You just make them see reason, and let me take it from there. That's an order. “ Fox snarled. He had taken quite a liking to Max, but he had to make him see there was no room for sympathy in the Alliance. Fox had despised CATS for his ruthlessness, but felt like he couldn’t turn back. Now, he was more jaded in regards to these kinds of missions. Unbelievable that someone can get used to murdering civilians and serving tyranny, but it happens. I am just following orders, it would be different if I could make policy. But I don’t. I just carry it out. And besides, if I don’t do it they will kill me and find some other to do the job, and they will probably be less kind then I am. Fox rationalized his actions, at least in his own mind.

Just following orders..... Max thought. The universal excuse for atrocity. And I’m a part of it.

Fox landed the glider on the ground. All the workers had assembled and were ready and waiting in front of the Stadium. Three rugged and burly men stood in front of the rest, talking about the situation.

“They finally know, Cid. You know they’re comin’ to get Crono,” The man he was talking too was nervously smoking a cigarette, holding it with large workman’s hands.

“Was only a matter of friggin’ time before they figured that out. “ Cid Highwind responded. The third man looked expectantly at Cid, who as usual had defiance written all over his face. He was held in very high regards, and everybody always came to Cid to settle disputes and personal problems. Most of the time he complied while strongly complaining and cursing, cigarette as inseparable to him as his hands.

“Is Crono in there?” Pete asked Cid.

“How the hell would I know?! Cid snapped. “They don’t send me a goddamn invitation, Pete. “

All three of them watched as Fox climbed out of the flyer, and athletically jumped the last 6 feet. Gasped could be heard as the man they knew as Max Payne, freedom fighter with a quest for vengeance, followed in Fox’s footsteps.

“They’ve captured Max!” Pete exclaimed surprised. “ I bet they are holding him hostage to force Cro—“

HOSTAGE MY ASS !! Cid yelled. “Don't be naive, Pete. Look at him. Not a mark on his face. He's a *****in rat, that's what he is.” Cid explained as he nervously took a few intakes of his cigarette. The two other men looked astounded at Cid’s revelation. Yet they couldn’t pretend Cid’s observation wasn’t true.

The flyer opened its main left door, and a hundred soldiers marched out, taking in position behind the Airforce commander. Max nodded at Fox after which he began the long walk toward Cid. Just stay cool, Max. Crono isn’t in there, they have nothing to gain by defending it. It will work out. Max tried to reassure himself.

When the century of soldiers were revealed, mutters and complaints began to rise from the bulk of the workers. Lines like: “ I am not dying here for the bloody Resistance.” and “Just give ‘em what they want Cid, there is no use fighting that. “ stuck with Cid Highwind, and he almost grew nauseous at the thought of giving up this battle before its even fought.

Cid turned around and faced the men who thought of him as their leader: “You’re all a *****in disgrace to humanity, you know that?” Cid said while he gritted his jaws together. “I’m gonna tell you all a little secret. As the few who aren’t as dim as most of ya have figured out, Crono could be in that Stadium.”

Exclamations of surprise all around. Cid raised his voice and continued. “ Are you ALL a bunch of *****in SHEEP? “ Many of the workers began to back off now.

One of the bolder sheep spoke up, “I have kids at home who need a father, Cid.” The sentiment was greeted with loud acknowledgement.

“Self preserving piece of **** !! “ Cid hissed. “Where is you’re little Leo gonna grow up in, Banta? In this goddamn sewer?! “ Cid said angrily while pointing at the flyer. “ Where Link still runs the show ?! Not if I can help it. No resistance can ever work if it isn’t even backed by the scumbags they’re fighting for?!!! Well, not me. You piss-ants can all go home if you want too, I’m staying right here. My boy ain’t growing up in the same world we had to live through. “ Cid said while he turned around.

“Hello there, Cid. “ Max said flatly as he raised his hands to show he wasn’t there to fight. Cid cursed under his breath. !!? Cid decked him with a right cross so full of hatred Max fell backwards on his head. That’s a great start... Max thought while he rubbed his chin. “You goddamn traitor. You lowest of the low, filthy *****in snake. “ Cid kicked Max in the gut as he spat the last insult.

Surviving has its limits…….

Romaji Sector

Snake was in doubt. He had completed his mission; he should go back and report. But that woman..........she puzzled him. The long blonde hair, the way she spoke.............even the clothes. Snake thought back to the tales Crono had told him about a girl named Ayla. Only at the end of those tales Ayla died tragically in Romaji Arena, the same place Ryu did years later. Damn Arenas and Stadiums.......nothing but trouble. Snake was suddenly reminded of something Auron said to him when they parted; You make you're own story. “Maybe she has...”

Snake's mind went into professional mode. She ain't no glow-in-the-dark, and anyone who still breathes is a potential ally. Snake watched as Ramura disappeared out of sight with giant steps. He's way too fast, but the tracks should be easy enough to spot. Snake glared at Beoulve castle one more time....looking intently at the 5 menacing towers...........and then sped off in the direction of the dinosaur and the blonde woman.

Effortlessly Snake ran directly over the trail, the huge marks left by Ramura's paws were undeniable. But the concentration of blue lights up ahead was enormous, even the sky was filled with circling blue lights. Look’s like the goddamn 4th of July. Snake finished his smoke, with a sharp turn of his heel he put out the cigarette. Alright.......I'm going in..

Snake sneaked in the darkness, moving carefully, hidden from sight. The trail had led him along the outskirts of Romaji forest, which was to his right. Snake had begun to worry a bit. With every mile he traveled, the beasts that roamed these parts had become larger and more gruesome. A sound made Snake look above him. It seems the pursuer is being pursued..... A deformed eagle was cutting through the darkness, but it had none of the pride of a normal eagle. It seemed to be scanning the surface, scavenging like a vulture. The sharp, deformed beak....their wide, bony wings.......menacing. In the darkness it looked more like a cross between a bat and a dragon. I'll keep my eye on him. You don't have this rattlesnake yet.

Still suspiciously eyeing the undead bird, Snake saw trouble up ahead. He traveled another mile. The population was even denser then it had been. Everywhere he looked blue lights roamed freely, and even illuminated the land somewhat. Large predators were fighting each other everywhere, only adding to the mutilations they already had. If even one of them spots me......I'm toast. I'll take my time, stick a bit closer to the forest.

In addition to the massive creatures that stood out noticeably, packs and hordes of smaller animals were everywhere. Scarred wolves, dears and even rabbits complemented to the sheer chaos that symbolized this part of Romaji. The blackened ground and fumes that smelled faintly of sulfur made him re-examine his beliefs. And all this time I thought hell was red.......

Snake felt insignificant to all that was going on around him, and he wanted it to stay that way. But he knew once the attention was upon him, he had no chance to escape. He made staying hidden, sticking close to the shadows and making light steps a higher priority then speed, as he always had done when faced with impossible odds. He paused every ten minutes to survey through his NVG.

Suddenly a pack of wolves to his left started yelping and panicking. Damnit. Snake took a dive behind a rock formation while drawing his Socom. But the wolves weren't after him. A concentrated stream of flames scorched through the pack who scattered and fled to all directions, apparently deciding safety in numbers wasn't an absolute truth. But Snake couldn't find the source of the flames. He heard a growl and a high pitched yelp, then he saw one of the wolves thrown into the air only to land 3 feet away from the rocks he was hiding behind.

Snake couldn't help but take peek at the dead wolf in front of him. It was almost in two pieces, and the teeth marks were huge. The wolf was gutted, the only thing holding the animal corpse together was its spine. Snake pulled himself away from his fascination and concentrated on the unseen predator.

Snake whipped out his NVG again. He'd expected these to be valuable in this sector, but he couldn't even imagine himself making it out of here without this trustworthy gadget. He peered in the direction the flames had come from. And there it was.....six blood red triangles, divided into three pairs. A spider? It wouldn't surprise me........but its too massive.... He couldn't see anything clearly but the eyes, still it was clear this monster rivaled Ramura in sheer size. The outline was huge.

Maral Sector

“PARASITE !!!” Cid shouted as he kicked again. Time to put an end to this... Max thought. He let his special gift kick in, and jumped up so fast you would have missed it if you blinked. “Cid, listen to me. Crono isn’t in there, he’s off to somewhere else. Have you seen Crono i—”

Cid eyes were all-consuming flames. “And I guess I’ll just have to take you’re word for it, don’t I? I guess I should trust ya. Think again, goddamn rat. “ Cid hocked a lugie right in Max’s eye as he got up in his face. He looked at Max daringly as he added, “Then do something about it, coward.”

Fox had been watching on. ”Keep an eye out. Release the androids at the first sign of trouble.” He told his lieutenant. He had seen Max go down once and it didn’t seem like this was going to be resolved peacefully.

Nevertheless he held of the troops as he went over himself. “Everything ok here, Max? “

Max didn’t even pay him any attention. “You want to hear me say it, Cid?! I’m with the Alliance!! I am here to clean out th—“

“That’s all I needed to hear.” Cid grunted as he stabbed Max in the side. Max let out a cry of pain as he sloped down to the ground, holding the knife that stuck out of his body in his hands, afraid to pull it out.

Fox didn’t think twice as he shot Cid in the head, while the second hatch opened and the androids and soldiers sped over. No......don’t....... Max thought as he witnessed the slaughter from the ground..........

Links Chamber, Present Time.

A soft melody is playing in Link’s magnificent study. The fire is pleasantly warm and the tyrant, himself, is watching data flash across a dimly lit screen. There seems to be a distinct emptiness surrounding this picture, as if some unvarying constant is missing.

Where is my darling wife? Link thought to himself bitterly. That, of course, led him to thoughts of the woman ninja and that, in turn, led him to thoughts of Sam Fischer. Fischer had been a useful ally, but his death was not anything to worry about. His sacrifice had allowed Max Payne to come to the Alliance. He was no half-hearted ally, he was willing to bloody his hands where Fischer had not. At first, he had been reluctant and had gone to meet with Fox to discuss the benefits of joining the Alliance. He had brought the girl with him. When the hedgehog had interfered Fox had knocked the creature out. Max’s reluctance had faded to nothing as he realized the compromising situation he was in, and he had joined the Alliance because he had nowhere left to turn.

It was Payne who had brought the woman to him. Max had sworn that the woman was his own wife, and looking at the girl, Link could believe it. The woman was Zelda’s exact twin. But then Payne had gone on to tell him what the girl was capable of, a ninja of such unbelievable potential that it startled even Max. Link refused to believe that his own wife could be capable of such feats; she was a mere mouse. In the end, his soft heart had gotten the better of him. Because of her striking resemblance to Zelda, Link had imprisoned the ninja with a very light guard. As it turned out, he grew to regret that decision deeply. The next morning Fox had reported to him that the guards set on the ninja had been easily dispatched. Still, he wondered where his wife could possibly be… Ever since that night…

Link was startled from his reverie as he heard the door to his study open. Max Payne came in with a figure shrouded in a dark cloak, the only distinctive feature about the man was his ornate helmet.

Now keep a stiff upper lip, Max. Remember what Fox said. Max bowed his head, “I have brought him as per your request, Master. I also have news from both the Maral and the Khintari sector. Both bases were found, but they were deserted. The builders that were working on Sephurst Stadium resisted.

Link raised an eyebrow. “They turned against me? You set an example, I presume?” Link’s voice was threatening and relaxed at the same time. No, I tried to keep Fox from “setting an example.” And I failed. I want Crono’s head for what he did to Sam, but the citizens of Bhaktar don’t deserve this.

“Your Airforce commander beat me to it, Master,” Max explained the situation as favorably as he could. I shouldn’t let that Resistance doctrine hinder my future here. All I have to do is remain on his good side and I’ve got it made. They don’t look out for me, and I don’t look out for them. Max Payne is out for personal success from now on. Its not like I have any other choice anyway…

Max Payne was still doubting which path to take. It weighed heavily on his mind.

Link looked up, “Yes, very good, Payne. Oh, and don’t forget to check Mario’s weapon shop. That petty criminal would hide anyone for the right price. And you mentioned they were thinking about going there, yes?” Max nodded. “Take care of it. Please leave us.” Max bowed and immediately took his leave.

Link walked towards the opposite end of the room where he kept an impressive selection of wines. After examining his choices carefully he finally picked a bottle, he turned to the mysterious figure and raised his eyebrow while holding up the bottle. The man shook his head. Link got down a glass and poured some of the rich, red vintage into it, “It’s been so long since I sent you on your mission. It’s been… what… 5 years since I gave you your orders? And not a single report in all that time… I was beginning to despair that I would ever hear from you again. I thought that maybe you had forgotten your loyalty…”

Meanwhile

The soldier silently pushed himself tightly against and partly under the rock formation, only one eye looking through a small hole. He couldn’t get himself totally buried; leaving only his legs were all the way under. But Snake wasn’t that worried about being seen; he was confident in his ability to remain hidden, even from an animal.

It looks like a hound......he's gonna smell me. The beast began to advance on Snake's location leisurely, taking its time. Snake saw one head directly above him, scanning the forest with its fiery red eyes, which stood out from the blue glow Snake had grown so accustomed to.

That’s why he can't smell me......he's undead. Snake thought clearly. Even for someone as hardened as Snake it was hard to think logically when there is a thirty-something feet tall canine above you. Then a second head joined the first, only slightly different, but apparently with a life of his own.

Two heads?! Six red triangles..........Don’t tell me this freak has another one.....Just stay still……...

The heads had their teeth exposed and was growling, drops of saliva plummeted down on Snake, as the hound looked straight over his location toward Romaji Forest. Just go away. There’s nothing there.

He felt the adrenaline widen his veins; Snake usually welcomed this state-of-mind when he was on a reconnaissance mission. But now the extra alertness was a burden, as he tried to absorb the texture of the rocks and merge with them. Breathing subdued, body spread out instead of the rookie’s mistake of curling up into a ball. Snake often thought of himself as a chameleon, not by changing color but by liquidating his presence and letting it vibrate in harmony with the natural object of choice, in this case a lonely rock formation in the most desolate sector of Bhaktar. It was a personal belief of Solid Snake that everything has its own frequency, their own tune. He knew the animal was searching for him, instinctively feeling there was someone here. It was vital that Snake could diminish his presence well and long enough so that the unusual canine would continue on its way.

The three-headed hound lingered for what seemed an eternity, staring into the forest as if he could penetrate the darkness with sheer will and concentration. Snake was concentrating hard to ignore the occasional snarl and violent clapping of the powerful jaws, and he avoided the trap of making a sudden move in response. His training and expertise saved him from that pitfall, serving him as well as they ever had.

Then the middle-head let loose a frightening howl, while standing on its hind legs. Snake felt a chill running up his spine, but remained motionless. With an abrupt movement the left head turned as it came down again, the body following its slow retreat. It was walking in the direction of Ramura’s trail, but Snake couldn’t care less. Another close call……I’ll have to deal with him when the time comes….

Snake was thinking back to the howl, and waiting until the vocalist of that homesick cry was completely out of sight. His thoughts were disturbed when he heard a faint flapping, but he was used to the strange sounds of this place. He looked around, didn’t see a source and resumed his observation of the retreating giant.

Clap……clap……clap…clap…CLAP…CLAP… Suddenly the flapping became louder and nearer fast. In a flash Snake turned round to see the deformed beak and razor-sharp claws of the undead eagle slash into his right shoulder. The bird of prey looked famished and thin but he grabbed the soldier with such force Snake felt constricted, trapped. He almost immediately pulled his knife with his left hand, and started slashing into the bird. The fast reaction was a tribute to his pure survival instincts rather then his training, for the eagle was flapping its rockhard wings wildly, raining blows on Snake’s head and body. He soldier experienced panic as he was confronted with a situation he wasn’t used to dealing with; fighting toe to toe with a ferocious flying predator was very different then using stealth to hunt down men one by one.

But in this situation, the serpent was every bit as ferocious as the eagle. Snake had the knife clenched in his closed fist and hacked with everything he had, aiming for the neck and head, twisting the blade each time it entered the flesh. The eagle was screeching and using its long claws at Snake’s belly, which he covered up with the already injured right arm. Snake’s right arm was hurting and burning from the constant attacks at the same place, but he managed to put all the pain and fear into his left arm. After a short but intense life and death struggle, the undead bird fell back; Snake immediately reached for his now accessible Socom, and fired 3 silent shots to the chest that sent the bird on its journey to the realm of the deceased, one that was long overdue.

Snake reached for his right arm now, it was a bloodied mess; He could see some of the muscle strings exposed through all the filth that was in the wound. I need to clean that soon. Don’t want my arm to infect. I could use some water now…..normal water that is. I’m going to keep this for the girls.

Snake decided to check his surroundings before attempting to bandage the arm, the area had gotten pretty quiet after the hound with the wolf howl had left. Seems he wasn’t the only one intimidated with him. When Snake checked behind him he saw the last thing he wanted right now. There it was, the three pairs of red eyes, making its way over to the wounded Solid Snake… My God……

Around the Campfire

Crono sat around the campfire along with Auron and his newfound allies. His mind was a whirlwind as he plotted about what to do next. Magus strutted up to the bonfire and looked at Crono, “Cloud’s out cold. He tried to heal Aeris, from what she told me, and when he couldn’t… well, from what I understand he’s been through some heavy magic use… and we both know that he’s not suited to that. We need to give him time to recover. Anyway, Crono, why have you called this meeting?”

Crono surveyed the thieves as if weighing them silently in his mind, finally he spoke, “We need to let Cloud recover, of course. From what I’ve heard you all need a rest as well. But once we’re ready, we’re going after Kefka.”

Magus cut in angrily, “It’s Id, now Crono! I told you that!”

Crono glanced at Magus, “I’ll believe that when I see Kefka’s corpse.”

Auron stared at him as if he was insane, “Are you mad!? Disregarding who we’re facing, what about Snake? And for that matter, what about Samus and Aeris!? Surely you don’t mean to have us all throw our lives away for nothing!?”

Crono had thoroughly planned this all out, “I know it seems dangerous. But this gives us an advantage. If we’re lucky Id and Kefka DID do battle, I think this is very likely, myself. I mean, when we tried to land our flier we experienced some sort of interference, but you guys didn’t seem to have any trouble. I think maybe Kefka can’t see as far as he was once able to. Maybe he doesn’t know about our allies here. And for that reason he will expect us to bide our time and lick our wounds. If Id flew straight to Kefka and somehow hurt him as I suspect. Hurt him enough to lose his sight… then by his latest knowledge he knows us to be carrying two cripples and down one fighter. That leaves us with only 3 capable warriors. He wouldn’t worry about us attacking. But imagine his surprise when we show up with three times the number of active warriors we are supposed to have? Will he be able to withstand us after such a sudden attack?”

The others mulled this over in silence. Edge quickly found a potential flaw in the plan, “What about Samus and Aeris? We can’t just leave them here…”

Crono grinned, “I’ve already thought about that. While you guys rest up I’ll get to work on making a makeshift backpack. This backpack will consist of a bunch of straps which should keep Aeris in place. We can take her with us. And as for Samus, she can be of great use to us even with her busted leg now that Cloud is back. As long as she has a constant Float on her, she should be alright!”

Orlandu nodded, “Yes, I see the logic in your thinking. It is a daring plan, I like it! But what of this Snake I have heard so much about. How will he know where we went?”

Crono was glad to see that the thieves were proving to be very sharp of mind, “Snake is an excellent tracker. He’ll be able to follow us easily.”

Crono’s idea was met with unanimous approval. The thieves, Auron, and even Magus took Crono’s advice and rested while he prepared the “backpack.” The final confrontation was drawing very near.

Link’s Chamber

The man immediately knelt before Link, “Master, you of all people know how sensitive this mission is, and how hard it is to keep regular contact. I have been so long away from the Hub, I wanted to make sure you remembered that I was loyal, otherwise even this short journey would be too big a risk. Master, I have heard disturbing rumors on my way here. I have journeyed this far only to see you again, please… allow me to ask but a single question.”

Link considered it carefully as he sipped from his glass, “Very well. It has been a long time for you, hasn’t it? Ask your question…”

The Stranger rose, having gained some sort of vindication in Link’s eyes, “Are the rumors true? Is Megaman 027 dead? When I heard the news, I was dumbfounded, I was under the impression that the Megaman model was almost indestructible in combat.”

Link seemed to tense up a bit, but kept control of his emotions by taking another sip of wine, “He underestimated a man by the name of Tommy Vercetti. When 027 murdered the last of the man’s family before his very eyes, he was unable to kill the man due to… complications. Vercetti found some grenades somewhere, pulled the pins, and leapt onto Megaman, even that model couldn’t withstand a point blank blast. But luckily I managed to merge him with the MC project, do you know about the MC project at all?”

The Stranger assumed a thoughtful expression, “It was in the very beginning stages when I left. CATS was ever so excited about the whole thing. How did you ever convince him to merge his baby with Mark?”

Link frowned, “He didn’t. He betrayed me rather than spoil his precious MC project. I executed him and replaced him with Fox as my head of military operations. Fox, in turn, appointed Sigma head of the MC project as well as all CAM production. I must say I am very impressed with his work, he has many projects that have been amazingly successful. These soldiers he creates… their powers are simply amazing. I can’t believe I ever let CATS advance farther than him, though CATS was always clever. He probably concealed Sigma’s brilliance in order to stay on top of the pecking order.”

The Stranger was very skeptical, “I remember Sigma. CATS always kept him on a tight rein because he was overly ambitious. That robot always had a big ego, which is why CATS felt the need to keep him under his direct supervision. I would be wary if I were you, my lord, his creations may see their first loyalty to him, and not you. And if it was Fox who appointed him, I wonder whether they are truly loyal to you, master,” Link’s brow furrowed.

“I also wonder how wise it was to keep Mark around. He has been through so many ahh… transfers… that I wonder how much of the man is left in him. He seems overly reckless from what I’ve heard, and psychotic besides. That doesn’t sound like the Mark I used to know…”

“SILENCE!” Link grew angry, “Mark is the same man he ever was!” but Link secretly wondered Is he really? “But you may be right about the other two. I shall have to keep a close eye on them…”

The Stranger looked Link in the eye, “I will always be true, master. You know that, even after all these years I have remembered my allegiance to you.”

Link poured himself another glass of wine, “Yes, about that… how are things in Lucavi Sector? Is the situation under control, is that troublesome boy still denied power?”

The Stranger smirked, “Everything is under control master! The situation is very volatile but I have managed to keep it stable for this long, have I not?”

Link grinned, “Yes, if rumors are to be believed you have, indeed, kept the situation under control. I am glad that you did not betray me, I would hate to have to kill you…”

The Stranger bowed his head.

Link seemed pleased by this response, “I am not going to lose contact with you again. You are one of the only people I can really trust, now, I will see to it that you report to me every…”

The Stranger let the words wash over him, he could tell that his seeds of doubt had begun to sprout in Link’s mind, and he was very pleased

Meanwhile

A single soldier, wounded and vulnerable. A massive predator, on its way to its prey. The odds were once again stacked against him. Faced with danger Snake forgot all about the pain in his wounded right arm and tried to think his way out of it. I better hide again. It worked the first time.

Slowly but certainly the monster drew nearer to the rocks Snake had been hiding behind. Now he had his prey in its sight. The middle-head opened its jaws and spewed its concentrated fire. The figure hiding in the shadows of the formation was set on fire, and kept burning until there were nothing left but ashes.............

The hound went over to check on the remains, striking it with its paw. Then the left head saw something he had seen only of the one he hunted most fiercely. A red substance that was very uncommon , one he had only seen when he fought with his rival, the liquid humans call “blood”. His animal mind working as it is, it immediately associated this as being a unique characteristic of the only one taller then he. Moving slowly, the undead hound began to follow the spoor........

Resistance Camp, Six Hours Later

Cloud felt refreshed, and after having been briefed on the plan he was more than willing to carry Aeris. Orlandu led the party because he seemed to have some intricate knowledge of where Kefka would be. When asked about it he merely looked away and muttered something about honor. Raziel flanked Orlandu and occasionally suggested alternate routes to the warrior. The one time Orlandu had not followed the mysterious warrior’s advice had led them into a pack of undead. They were easily dispatched, but ever after that Orlandu listened very closely to Raziel.

The group trekked through the endless wasteland that was Romaji. As they traveled they fell into casual conversation, hoping to break the bleak monotony of the bleak landscape. Crono walked with Auron as they discussed various trivialities. Samus reveled in her newfound mobility by talking amiably with Cloud and Aeris. Magus and Vivi were in deep conversation about things better left to the imagination. Edge and Sabin were busy trying to build a friendship, after the coup it was not easy.

As the wanderers trudged on the conversation steadily died out. Everybody could feel that there was something near. Something very horrible and very near. Then they got their first view of Kefka’s abode.

A single obsidian tower plunged into the sky, as if trying to pierce the heavens. It was immense and foreboding. Four lesser towers stood in a square, with the great tower in the middle. Their onyx heights were impressive as well, but they seemed to all lean towards the central pillar, as if bowing to it in homage. Around it all was a black fence with cruel spikes atop it.

Orlandu turned away in disgust. What has he done to our home? It was once so proud, so pure… Even as he looked at it he was filled with a sense of terror. Are we really ready? I didn’t think we were before, but… there’s no turning back now…

Orlandu was startled from his reverie by Raziel’s words, “Is there something on the fence there?” Raziel pointed farther down the way, there seemed to be some red object atop the fence.

Orlandu was puzzled, “That’s a little to the right of where the gate is. I wonder what it is?”

Magus was cynical, “I’m not sure we want to find out what it is, but if the gate is in that direction… lead on fearless leader.” He sneered at Orlandu, obviously having sensed some of his fear.

Everybody’s gaze was fixed on the red object as they came closer and closer to it. Magus gasped, “It can’t be!” It was becoming clearer and clearer with each step that the thing atop the fence was a corpse. A man with red flowing hair stood like some twisted sentinel atop the fence. His armor was cracked and his face was covered by his long hair. Three of the fence spikes were driven through each of his arms to hold him atop the fence. Once they finally stood before his terrible visage, they could see that the gate was gone. Magus was in disbelief, “But, he had to have killed Kefka! To kill Schala surely—“

Edge broke in, “Look with your eyes! That man seems to bear a striking resemblance to this ‘Id’ I’ve heard so much about! Let it go, we still have to deal with Lord Kefka!”

Orlandu beckoned to the rest of the party as he led the way into Kefka’s domain. As they approached the central tower, Orlandu stopped at the line created by two of the lesser towers. Everybody could feel some immense energy crackling in the air, something they couldn’t quite see. Vivi saw, though, and if Magus weren’t trying to get a hold of his turbulent emotions he would see, too. There was a terrible blue forcefield that was radiated between the four towers. He had said nothing because it was not his way to speak when it was unnecessary, people found his voice to be unnerving at times. He knew that even those less magically inclined than he would be able to feel the incredible power of this barrier.

“Cloud, let me see,” Aeris could feel the terrible emanations even though she could not see what caused them, when he did turn around she gasped, “It’s horrible. That… thing can kill at a touch. Kefka doesn’t even have to worry about us trying to get in with that thing in place.”

Magus finally realized what it was, “This is strange. Kefka did not make this, unless he has completely changed since I knew him. This is not his…. energy. I don’t know what this is, if he has to resort to this. Maybe he’s more wounded than even we know.”

Orlandu was shocked, “He’s crazy! Those haven’t been free in years! Yet he harnesses them somehow-“

Crono stared at him, “What are you talking about?”

Military flyer

Max Payne and Fox Mcloud we’re on their way back to report to Link. The way back had been quiet. Max’s ribs had been bandaged. He was still hurting and slouched in his seat with his hands over the bandages, as if he wanted to defend that new weakness.

Max looked over at Fox. The being that had killed Cid Highwind, one of the men he had most respected. Cid had always wanted to join the Resistance, but Crono asserted him he was most valuable where he was now, making sure what the Resistance was doing was important. Public sentiment was a powerful tool, one that could easily sway and come back to haunt you if you don’t feed it. Or so Auron had always told Crono.

“You didn’t have to step in yet. It wasn’t the right moment.” Max said softly, looking at Fox.

“If anything, I didn’t act soon enough. If that knife would have been a few inches higher, poof, no more Max Payne. “ Fox said. “Either way, as soon as you were hurt I had to attack. If we let them get away with injuring a member of the Alliance we weaken our grip over the population. And if Master Link found out about that, poof, no more Max, no more Fox.”

Max was too drained to argue. He could see why Fox had done it, it wasn’t his fault. Why everything had collapsed around him like it did in such a short time, he couldn’t understand. Fox isn’t a bad guy. Maybe I should try and be like him. Just go with the motions. Make a career in the Link Alliance. Heh, never thought I would understand collaborators........but I do. We are all trying to make our own way in a ****** world.

“Don’t show Link you got hurt on your first assignment. “Fox advised. “ Matter of fact, don’t ever show weakness around him. Ever. “

Max nodded weakly. He looked out the window as he saw a shooting star dropping fast. Shooting stars.....a path as random as life itself. Twisting and turning, where the tides of fortune will take us no man can know........tricky tides.....

Meanwhile

If you had told me a year ago I would go to Kefka’s realm, use an undead bird to divert a three-headed giant dog to stay alive, I would have knocked you out without question. Snake thought with while running through the woods, holding his right arm close to his body. It was pouring out blood.

He was back in Romaji forest, although at a point he never could have reached without exiting it at the point he did. Mountains stood in between, and even as Snake was in excellent condition, it had been a long journey, and who knew how much further he had to travel. Climbing peaks was not on his agenda.

He continued running for a half hour, biting through the pain, when he decided to take a break to take care of his arm. He was quite good at first aid, and he had disinfectants as well as bandages. He fashioned a mitella that was tight enough to blunt the pain while he ran. I wouldn’t mind it if Aeris was here to cure this..........everybody needs a little help now and then.

Snake resumed his run. Pretty soon he came upon a river. He saw the trail of Ramura suddenly halt right before the water. Left or right?..........Left is lucky.

Snake sped along the riverbank, searching for any clue that could tell him where they had gone. He held his trusty NVG in his right hand, looking through them at periodic intervals. He saw something near the middle that caught his attention. A dark red stain colored the water. Blood. And a lot of it.

A lonely worn out wooden sign was nailed to a nearby tree, most of the letters unreadable.

L_v___ia__R_ve_ was all that remained.

Snake was now standing right in front of the stain in the water. He tried look into the river but it was filthy, it was impossible to see anything. The river refused to tell any of its secrets. Snake had a natural distaste for the unknown, he was not particularly pleased he had to cross a river he knew nothing about, especially one with blood in the middle. But he could see Ramura’s trail continue on the other side. When he looked up he also saw a trail of smoke coming from behind some tree’s, like there was a campfire further along the path.

I am not about to give up and turn around, I’ve come too far for that. But I’m not gonna swim. After all the freaky things I’ve seen here, you can’t tell me there is nothing in that river. I am not going down to some freaked up fish. Snake decided.

With his left arm he searched his backpack, and took a small axe from it. Crono told me there weren’t any rivers in Romaji forest, I’m glad I brought this. Snake began to cut down some small tree’s with his tool, making even shaped logs out of them. With rope he had in his backpack he managed a small but sturdy raft.

Just as he was about to give it the last push into the water, he saw movement in the water. A slim but long form was slithering through the river. He immediately halted and looked carefully with his NVG. It was still too hard to tell, but he didn’t want anything to do with the 30+ feet long swimmer. I think I’ll just wait until he’s a bit farther away.

After a minute the water-snake had already disappeared from view. Snake pushed his handywork into the water, and jumped upon it . He had made one long paddle, so he could steer the raft with his one good arm. Like a merchant in Venice he was traversing the river, although Snake didn’t know about the Italian city. Venice was a charming part of a more peaceful universe then his, and one that he would never know.

There might be ten more of those.....I have no way to know. Snake frantically looked left and right , but so far everything seemed quiet and serene. This has been easier then it looked so far....guess I should be glad.....better too cautious then to—!!?

Snake looked to his left as his face showed astonishment. He tried to move his right arm, but it was just too damaged. I have to go faster......I’m not going to make it......

Meanwhile

Orlandu’s eyes cut to Crono, “Atop each of these four towers is an imprisoned esper. Long ago they ran rampant throughout this land. This was hundreds of years ago, it was a time of chaos. Finally they were hunted down and imprisoned in crystal. Then they were placed at the tops of these four towers. Ever since they have been bound in the towers, constantly in a state of stasis imposed on them by the crystals. This power, though, it can only be them. Kefka is somehow harnessing their energies, the only way to do that is to free them. He must have an incredible will to keep them under control.”

Edge spoke up, “What do we do about it?”

Orlandu saw only one way, “The only way to do it would be to kill the Espers. But it’s not as simple as just killing one. With this square configuration even if we killed one they would still be able to maintain a triangle configuration. We need to kill two of them, then maybe we will be able to enter the main tower. There is one esper in each tower, although I don’t know which esper is inside which tower. The Western tower has a snow-white door, with a picture of a beautiful woman on it. The Northern door: Black with a crown and a dragon. East : Green, with a picture of an eye that follows everyone with an eerie gaze. South: Yellow with a lightening bolt.”

On the river

To his left Snake saw a towering tidal wave, and In the center of it appeared a light-blue being, almost a slim version of a lizard’s head. Snake paddled faster and faster, but he knew the shore was too far away to make it. Tackled just before the line.......

As a last resort, Snake decided to dive into the water. He was swimming frantically, and then he saw its full body for the first time. Out of the water emerged a snake-like body, with two massive fins that looked like wings and a head that deeply resembled a dragon’s, briefly showing before diving full force on top of his raft. Snake drew his Socom and dove underwater. The water was unclear but with the NVG he could just see the body of Leviathan swimming past him. In a reflex he swung his arm around its fin. He almost immediately regretted it, the fin was razor-sharp and cut deeply into his arm. He managed to throw his backpack over it , holding the straps with his hand as Leviathan gained momentum, feeling the presence on his back. The backpack was beginning to tear already, but it held for the moment.

With a power surge he rose above the water again, and Snake could see the shore to his left. Snake was panicking at this moment, the creature was agile enough to reach around and bring its dangerous jaws all the way to him. he made a desperate move..........

Snake dove with everything he had, leaving his backpack, plummeting down 30 feet towards the tree’s which broke his fall somewhat. With a loud thud Snake hit the ground, the pain was unbelievable. He felt like he didn’t have a bone in his body left. With a glazed outlook he could see a small cabin nearby, with the tracks moving toward it. He felt the bottle with the magic water still in the inside pocket of his vest.
